Abstract

Abstract A suture (30) is attached to a surgical needle (10) possessing a shank (12) of reduced diameter. Attachment is accomplished by means of a shrinkable tubing (20) which is fitted about the shank of the needle and an end of the suture, application of heat to the tubing effecting its shrinkage with consequent secure attachment of the needle to the suture.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 34 words
A combined surgical needle-suture device which comprises: a) a needle having a shank of reduced cross-section; b) a suture; and, c) a shrinkable tubing around said needle shank and a portion of said suture.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 34 words
A combined surgical needle-suture device which comprises: a) a needle having a shank of reduced cross-section; b) a suture; and, c) a shrinkable tubing around said needle shank and a portion of said suture.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 23 words
The combined surgical needle-suture device of Claim 1 wherein the shrinkable tubing is manufactured from a memory metal or a shrinkable plastic material.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 24 words
The combined surgical needle-suture device of Claim 1 characterized in that the pull-out force for said combination is as defined for standard needle attachment.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 26 words
The combined surgical needle-suture device of Claim 1 characterized in that the pull-out force for said combination is as defined for removable or detachable needle attachment.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 20 words
The combined surgical needle-suture device of Claim 1 wherein the butt end of the shank of the needle is rounded.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 61 words
The combined surgical needle-suture device of Claim 1 wherein the ratio of the axial length of the shrinkable tubing to the effective axial length of the needle shank is at least about 4:1 when the needle is intended to be non-detachable from the suture and no more than about 3.5:1 when the needle is intended to be detachable from the suture.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 56 words
A method for attaching a surgical needle to a suture which comprises: a) providing a needle having a shank of reduced cross-section; b) placing a shrinkable tubing around the reduced diameter shank and the suture; and, c) applying energy to the shrinkable tubing to bring the tubing into engagement with the needle shank and the suture.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 56 words
A method for attaching a surgical needle to a suture which comprises: a) providing a needle having a shank of reduced cross-section; b) placing a shrinkable tubing around the reduced diameter shank and the suture; and, c) applying energy to the shrinkable tubing to bring the tubing into engagement with the needle shank and the suture.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 20 words
The method of Claim 7 wherein said shrinkable tubing is manufactured from a memory metal or a shrinkable plastic material.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 15 words
The method of Claim 7 wherein the butt end of the needle shank is rounded.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 54 words
The method of Claim 7 wherein the axial length of the tubing to the effective axial length of the needle shank is at least about 4:1 when the needle is intended to be non-detachable from the suture and no more than about 3.5:1 when the needle is intended to be detachable from the suture.
