Abstract

Abstract A receiver for a mobile telephone system operating in a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) system, includes a gain control means (12,14,16) coupled to receive an input signal, being switchable under the control of digital control signals between a plurality of gain and/or attenuation levels. A equaliser (6) is coupled to receive the output signal from the gain control means (12,14,16). A signal strength unit (20) determines the value of the received signal and provides the digital control signals so as to set the gain or attenuation level constant for a time slot of the TDMA system, said determining means including means for recording the determined signal value to set the level of said gain control means prior to a predetermined time slot based upon measurements made during a preceding time period.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 129 words
A receiver for a mobile telephone system operating in a time division multiple access (TDMA) system, the receiver including a gain control means (10) coupled to receive an input signal, the receiver being characterised in that the gain control means is switchable under the control of digital control signals between a plurality of gain and/or attenuation levels, the receiver also including means (20) for determining the value of the received signal and providing said digital control signals to set the gain or attenuation level constant for a time slot of the TDMA system, said determining means including means for recording the determined signal value to set the level of said gain control means (10) prior to a predetermined time slot based upon measurements made during a preceding time period.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 129 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 24 words
A receiver as claimed in claim 1 including an equaliser means (16) coupled to receive the output signal from the gain control means (10).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 58 words
A receiver as claimed in either of the preceding claims, wherein the determining means (20) is operative to set the gain level prior to a predetermined time slot based upon measurements made immediately prior to the time slot, the determining means including means for providing the current signal value to control the values of the digital control signals.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 44 words
A receiver as claimed in claim 3, wherein the determining means (20) includes a counter (22) which increments the value of the digital control signals, and means (24) for detecting a peak value of the input signal to stop operation of the counter (22).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 52 words
A receiver according to any of the preceding claims in which the gain control means (10) includes a plurality of switched gain amplifiers (12,14,16) connected in cascade, with each amplifier (12,14,16) having a gain control line (12′,14′,16′) for selecting one of a plurality of gain levels dependent on said digital control signals.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 39 words
A receiver as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the determining means (20) includes a logarithmic amplifier (40) for measuring the input signal, coupled to an analogue to digital converter (42) for providing said digital control signals.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 54 words
A receiver as claimed in any of the preceding claims including means (4) for demodulating the input signal, means (20) for measuring the strength of the demodulated signal, and means (32) for adding the measured strength to the gain setting of the gain control means (10) to provide an indication of received signal strength.
