Claim 1
Independent Claim
262 words
An exterior rear view mirror for a motor vehicle comprising bracket means (18) adapted to be secured to the vehicle body, and a housing (10) containing a reflective member (12) and having first and second support elements (16, 22) each of which is pivotally connected to the bracket means (18) for relative angular movement about a pivot axis (40), the pivotal connection between the second support element (22) and the bracket means (18) including detent means adapted to hold the housing (10) at a predetermined orientation relative to the bracket means (18), the second support element (22) being movable relative to the bracket means (18) parallel to the pivot axis (40) to effect engagement and disengagement of the detent means and resilient means (50) being arranged to urge the detent means into engagement, characterised in that the detent means comprises a first pair of detent formations (78, 80) on the second support element (22) diametrically spaced on opposite sides of the pivot axis (40) and adapted to engage with a first pair of complementary formations (74, 76) on one face of a washer (60) located between the second support element (22) and the bracket means (18), and a second pair of detent formations (70, 72) on the opposite face of the washer (60) diametrically spaced apart from one another relative to the pivot axis (40) and orientated at 90° to the first pair of complementary formations (74, 76), the second pair of detent formations being adapted to engage with a second pair of complementary formations (66, 68) on the bracket means (18).

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
64 words
An exterior mirror according to claim 1, wherein the first support element (16) is rigidly connected to the second support element (22), the bracket (18) carries a slider (36) mounted for movement parallel to the pivot axis (40) and engaging with the first support element (16), and the resilient means comprises a compression spring (50) engaging between the bracket (18) and the slider (36).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
58 words
An exterior mirror according to claim 1, or 2, wherein the detent formations (72, 74; 78, 80) and their respective complementary formations (66, 68; 74, 76) are so shaped that one of the pairs of detent formations tends to remain in engagement with its respective complementary formations after the housing (10) has been displaced from its predetermined orientation.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
40 words
An exterior mirror according to claim 3, wherein one of the pairs of detent formations (78, 80) has side faces which are substantially parallel to each other, while the other pair of detent formations (72, 74) has sloping side faces.
