Abstract

Abstract In modern data communications systems, it is frequently necessary to detect predetermined bit patterns or character patterns in a data stream. A method is proposed for this in which the bit sequence to be found is stored as bit pattern in a memory. In the memory, further bit patterns are stored which are read out of the memory as a function of the characters occurring in the datastream and are supplied in parallel to a shift register. In the shift register, an identification is continuously forwarded from the first stage to subsequent stages as long as a correspondence of the bit sequence examined with the bit pattern sought is given. The last stage of the shift register then identifies the correspondence with the bit pattern sought.
