Method for making an implantable bone prosthesis based on hydroxyapatite
Abstract
Abstract A method for producing an implantable bone prosthesis is described, in which hydroxyapatite is applied directly to a metallic substrate by plasma spraying. This has the advantage that even complicated geometries can be coated with the hydroxyapatite. The disadvantage of the plasma spraying method is, however, the high residual porosity of the hydroxyapatite, its poor adhesion to the metallic substrate and its undefined crystallochemical composition. To overcome these disadvantages, the hydroxyapatite sprayed on is therefore subjected to a subsequent hydrothermal aftertreatment. This leads to rehydration and crystallochemical consolidation of the undefined plasma hydroxyapatite. In a third process step, the hydroxyapatite surface is finally brought to the theoretical density by hot isostatic pressing and is firmly bound to the substrate by means of a more diffusive bond.
