Use of polyfluoroalkanes of the formula in which residues X located on the same C atom denote hydrogen and/or fluorine, residues Y located on the same C atom denote hydrogen, fluorine and/or CF 3 and R denotes CH 2 F, CHF 2 , CH 3 , CF 3 , CF 2 -CH 3 , CF 2 CH 2 F, CH 2 -CH 3 , CH 2 -CH 2 -CH 3 or -CH(CH 3 )-CH 3 and one molecule of the formula (I) contains at least two fluorine atoms, with the exception of the compounds perfluoropropane, 1,1,1,2,2,-pentafluoropropane and heptafluoropropane, as blowing gases for closed cell plastic foams, wherein closed cell foams based on isocyanates are excepted.
