Abstract
Abstract A suspension unit (10) for a trailer comprises an outer tubular member (12) inside which an elongate member (30) is free to rotate. The walls (14) of the tubular member are outwardly deformed at substantially a third of the distance from one end of the wall so as to provide an enlarged interior cross sectional area at the region of deformation. Application of a load to the trailer causes rubber shock absorbers (42) to move into the enlarged area.

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim
113 words
A suspension unit (10) comprising a tubular member (12), an elongate member (30) extending through the tubular member (12), the elongate member (30) being rotatable about its longitudinal axis, a torque arm (44) connected to one end of the elongate member (30), the wall of the elongate member (30) comprising a plurality of apices (34) extending towards the tubular member (12) such that a plurality of chambers are defined between the wall of the elongate member (30) and the tubular member (12), an elongate resiliently deformable member (42) being provided in each chamber, wherein the chambers are non-symmetrical when viewed in cross-section when substantially no load is applied to the suspension unit (10).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
34 words
A suspension unit (10) as claimed in claim 1, wherein regions of the tubular member (12) are outwardly deformed so as to increase the cross sectional area of the chambers at those deformed regions.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
34 words
A suspension unit (10) as claimed in claim 2, wherein the elongate resiliently deformable members (42) are urged towards said regions of the chamber on application of a load to the suspension unit (10)
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
43 words
A suspension unit (10) as claimed in claim 2, wherein the number of apices (34) of the elongate member (30), the number of said outwardly deformed regions of the tubular member (12) and the number of resiliently deformable members (42) are the same.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
31 words
A suspension unit (10) as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the number of internal angles greater than 180° equals the number of said outwardly deformed regions of the tubular member.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
49 words
A suspension unit (10) as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the tubular member (12) comprises a number of walls (14) each side being outwardly deformed, the deformation having a peak (16) substantially a third of the distance along the wall (14) from one end of that wall (14).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
35 words
A suspension unit (10) as claimed in claim 6, wherein the portion of the wall (14) of the tubular member (12) extending from the other end of said wall (14) is substantially not deformed outwardly.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
23 words
A suspension unit (10) as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the elongate member (30) comprises a concave region between adjacent apices (34).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
26 words
A suspension unit (10) as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein at least one of the elongate member (30) or tubular member (12) comprises a metal.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
30 words
A suspension unit (10) as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein a stub axle is provided at the end of the torque arm (44) remote from the elongate member (30).
