Abstract
Abstract Data processing apparatus is described which includes memory areas for storing an image and trigger fields for the image, and a display which indicates a cursor in one of two configurations. Circuitry is provided for moving the cursor and enabling it to implement a select operation for a particular subroutine. This provides a user interface mechanism which enables the trigger fields to be invisible and their position indicated only by the altering of the cursor configuration on the display upon the cursor being moved into an invisible trigger field.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim
69 words
A display-based, user-interface mechanism, supporting a user-controllable cursor facility and trigger means for co-ordinating pre-defined trigger fields with locations of the display, wherein the trigger fields are buried and not displayed, the cursor facility and the trigger means being interactive to scan the trigger field space with the display space and to significantly modify the cursor in display space when a trigger field is encountered in trigger field space.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
99 words
A mechanism as claimed in claim 1, including storage means for storing separately world plane images and associated trigger fields, a display, means for indicating a cursor on the display, means to alter the cursor between at least two configurations, and means for moving the cursor and enabling a select operation, wherein a stored image is displayed without its associated trigger fields and the cursor displayed on the display is automatically switched from one configuration to the other upon the cursor being moved into a trigger field, to thereby indicate to the user the presence of the trigger field.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
22 words
A mechanism as claimed in claim 2, wherein a select operation is enabled upon the occurrence of a change of cursor configuration.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
25 words
A mechanism as claimed in Claim 3, wherein the user's acceptance of the select operation causes a branch to be taken in the executing program.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
35 words
A mechanism as claimed in claim 3, wherein a subroutine associated with the trigger field is enabled for selection only when the cursor has changed into a configuration indicating its presence in a trigger field.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
14 words
Data processing apparatus including a display-based, user-interface mechanism as claimed in any preceding claim.
