Abstract

Abstract Closed blood bag system useful for the filtration of leukocytes from a red blood cell concentrate followed by the preparation and long term storage of neocytes and, preferably, gerocytes from the filtered concentrate. In very preferred embodiments, the system also provides containers for the expression of plasma and the preparation and long term storage of platelets.

Claim 5
Dependent Claim 19 words
The system of claim 1 wherein the first port is in direct, sterile communication with at least two bags.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 17 words
The system of claim 1 wherein the first port is in direct, sterile communication with three bags.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 29 words
The system of claim 5 wherein at least one of the bags in direct sterile communication with the first port is adapted for the long term storage of platelets.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 25 words
The system of claim 6 wherein the bag adapted for storage of platelets is made from a plastic film having a relatively high gas transmissivity.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 27 words
The system of claim 1 wherein the red blood cell storage solution comprises a solution suitable for storing red blood cells for at least about 42 days.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 24 words
The system of claim 2 where the third bag contains a solution selected from a red blood cell storage solution and a saline solution.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 36 words
The system of claim 1 wherein the bag for separation of the red blood cells into neocytes and gerocytes comprises an elongated plastic bag having a length to width ratio of at least 2 to 1.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 17 words
The system of claim 10 wherein the length to width ratio is at least 2.5 to 1.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 72 words
In a closed blood bag system for the collection and separation of red blood cells into neocytes and gerocytes and comprising a neocyte/gerocyte separation bag and at least one other bag in direct sterile communication with the separation bag, the improvement comprising having a filter for filtering white blood cells from a mixture of white blood cells and red blood cells, the filter being in direct, sterile communication with the separation bag.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 72 words
In a closed blood bag system for the collection and separation of red blood cells into neocytes and gerocytes and comprising a neocyte/gerocyte separation bag and at least one other bag in direct sterile communication with the separation bag, the improvement comprising having a filter for filtering white blood cells from a mixture of white blood cells and red blood cells, the filter being in direct, sterile communication with the separation bag.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 31 words
The system of claim 12 wherein a bag containing a saline solution or a red blood cell storage solution is in direct sterile communication with the filter and the separation bag.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 36 words
The system of claim 12 wherein the filter includes two ports, a first port in direct sterile communication with the separation bag and a second port in direct sterile communication with at least one other bag.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 34 words
The system of claim 12 wherein the second port is in direct sterile communication with at least two bags, one of which is made from a plastic film having a relatively high gas transmissivity.
Claim 18
Independent Claim 109 words
A method of preparing neocytes comprising the steps of (a) introducing a suspension of packed red blood cells and white blood cells into a filter having an entrance port and an exit port and capable of removing substantially all white blood cells from the suspension; (b) collecting the filtered red blood cells into a separation bag adapted to separate red blood cells into neocytes and gerocytes; (c) separating the cells of step (b) into neocytes and gerocytes; and (d) expressing the neocytes into a bag in direct sterile communication with the separation bag and containing a solution selected from a saline solution and a red blood cell storage solution.
Claim 19
Claim 20
