Abstract

Abstract There is provided a tool comprising a fully dense sheet of diamond brazed to a substrate. The diamond sheet is manufactured by a chemical vapor deposition process and has a thickness of at least about 0.1 mm. The braze material is preferably a carbide-former. A method for making such tools is also provided.

Claim 13
Independent Claim 98 words
A method for making a tool comprising the steps: (1) machining a diamond sheet made by a low pressure deposition process to dimensions which are approximately equal to those of the substrate to which it is to be brazed; (2) disposing a braze alloy intermediate said diamond sheet and a substrate; (3) heating the result of step (2) to a temperature sufficient to at least partly melt said braze alloy; (4) cooling the composite material which results from step (3); and (5) machining the diamond layer and/or the substrate of said composite material to substantially the same dimensions.
Claim 14
Independent Claim 98 words
A method for making a tool comprising the steps: (1) machining a diamond sheet made by a low pressure deposition process to dimensions which are approximately equal to those of the substrate to which it is to be brazed; (2) disposing a braze alloy intermediate said diamond sheet and a substrate; (3) heating the result of step (2) to a temperature sufficient to at least partly melt said braze alloy; (4) cooling the composite material which results from step (3); and (5) machining the diamond layer and/or the substrate of said composite material to substantially the same dimensions.
