Abstract

Abstract A machine translation system capable of obtaining a consistent translation for an entire document by taking a context into account in translating each word or sentence. In this system, document information (105) necessary to remove uncertainty in the translation due to a presence of a plurality of candidates for the translation is utilized whenever uncertainty due to a presence of a plurality of candidates for the translation arises by attempting to translate according to a translation dictionary (104) containing rules for translation.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 124 words
A machine translation system for translating an original document in a first language into a translated document in a second language, comprising: translation dictionary means(104) for storing rules for translation from the first language to the second language; and means(103) for translating the document by using the translation dictionary means(104); CHARACTERIZED BY FURTHER COMPRISING: document information memory means(105) for storing a document information necessary to remove uncertainty in the translation due to a presence of a plurality of candidates for the translation; AND CHARACTERIZED IN THAT the translating means(103) utilizes the document information in the document information memory means(105) whenever uncertainty due to a presence of a plurality of candidates for the translation arises by attempting to translate according to the translation dictionary means-(104).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 124 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 84 words
The system of claim 1, wherein the document information includes at least one of a semantic information for the document in the first language, syntactic information for the document in the first language, a semantic information for then document in the first language, a structural transfer information for a conversion of the document from the first language to the second language, a syntactic generation information for the document in the second language, and a semantic generation information for the document in the second language.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 38 words
The system of claim 1, wherein the document information utilized by the translating means (103) in translating a particular part of the document is obtained from other parts of the document which is different from the particular part.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 24 words
The system of claim 1, wherein the document information in the document information memory means(105) is obtained by a previous translation of the document.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 50 words
The system of claim 4, wherein the translating means(103) translates the document first by using only the translation dictionary means(104), in a course of which the document information is obtained, and then the translating means(103) translates the document using both the translation dictionary means(104) and the document information memory means(105).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 30 words
The system of claim 5, wherein the document information is such an information for which no uncertainty arose when the document is translated by using only the translation dictionary means(104).
Claim 8
Independent Claim 112 words
A method of machine translation for translating an original document in a first language into a translated document in a second language, comprising the steps of: preparing rules for translation from the first language to the second language: and translating the document by using the rules; CHARACTERIZED BY FURTHER COMPRISING A STEP OF: accumulating a document information necessary to remove uncertainty in the translation due to a presence of a plurality of candidates for the translation; AND CHARACTERIZED IN THAT at the translating step, the document information is utilized whenever uncertainty due to a presence of a plurality of candidate for the translation arises by attempting to translate according to the rules.
Claim 9
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 84 words
The method of claim 7, wherein the document information includes at least one of a semantic information for the document in the first language, syntactic information for the document in the first language, a semantic information for then document in the first language, a structural transfer information for a conversion of the document from the first language to the second language. a syntactic generation information for the document in the second language, and a semantic generation information for the document in the second language.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 33 words
The system of claim 7, wherein the document information utilized in translating a particular part of the document is obtained from other parts of the document which is different from the particular part.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method of claim 7, wherein the document information in the document is obtained by a previous translation of the document.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 42 words
The method of claim 10, wherein the document is first translated by using only the rules. in a course of which the document information is obtained, and then the the document is translated by using both the rules and the document information.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method of claim 11. wherein the document information is such an information for which no uncertainty arose when the document is translated by using only the rules.
