Micromechanical element
Abstract
Abstract A micromechanical element for coupling a plurality of optical fibres arranged in a plane to an optical component which contains a number of optical waveguides, consists of a substrate into which there are worked over a first longitudinal section guide grooves which are adjoined over a second longitudinal section by a region widened in the form of a step. Use is made of optical fibres which are provided with a plastic cladding. This cladding is removed over a length corresponding to the first longitudinal section of the substrate. The optical fibres are inserted over this length into the guide grooves and the plastic-clad optical fibres are laid over a part adjacent thereto into the second region of the substrate. The optical fibres are fixed in both regions of the substrate. The fibre ends from which the plastic cladding has been removed lie precisely in a plane with the surface of the element which contains them. <IMAGE>
