Abstract

The invention relates to a method for supplying additional breathing gas from a breathing gas source to a spontaneously breathing patient, the breathing gas being supplied to the patient during inspiration (inspiration phase of a breathing cycle). In order to be able to supply the patient with the breathing gas in such an intermittent breathing gas supply that the gas supply practically does not perceive it as a disturbance, the invention provides that the course of the breathing gas volume supplied to the patient per unit time corresponds to the course of the air volume inhaled by the patient per unit time is adjusted over time at least in a partial area of the inspiration phase. The invention also relates to a device for supplying breathing gas to a patient with a breathing gas source, a breathing gas supply device, an inhalation or similar breathing sensor (10), a measuring device and at least one valve which is in control connection with the breathing sensor (10) and the measuring device. In particular for carrying out the method mentioned at the outset, the valve (s) is (are) designed as a metering valve (1, 19) which, together with the breathing sensor (10), is connected to a control device (9) which regulates the breathing gas supply during the inspiration phase of a breathing cycle , 17) is (are) connected.
