Abstract

An input stage (front end) for an optical broadband receiver is specified, which contains a monolithically integrated Darlington circuit composed of bipolar transistors (T1, T2). The Darlington circuit, a simple integrated amplifier (OP) developed for UHF applications in the range between 0 and 2 GHz, has been improved in its linearity by switching on a suitable transimpedance resistor (R T ) to such an extent that it, together with an avalanche Photodiode (APD) can be used in the frequency range from 0 to 5 GHz and can also be used in conjunction with PIN diodes for optical transmission links of short and medium lengths.
