Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim
61 words
A device (10) for removing obstructive tissue from the lumen (12) of a body vessel (14) which comprises: a first wire (16) positionable in said lumen (12); a second wire (20) having a distal end slidably engaged with said first wire (16); and a rotatable cutter (18) supported by said second wire (20) for movement therewith along said first wire (16).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
23 words
A device according to claim 1 further comprising means (24) for moving said cutter (18) in an arc around said first wire (16).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
35 words
A device according to claim 1 or 2 further comprising a sheath (30) having a first lumen (36) for supporting said first wire (16) and a second lumen (38) for supporting said second wire (20).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
32 words
A device according to claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein said distal end of said second wire (20) is formed with a ring (34) for slidable engagement along said first wire (16).
Claim 5
Independent Claim
31 words
A device according to any preceding claim wherein said distal end of said second wire (20) is bent to establish an extension (32) oriented substantially perpendicular to said first wire (16).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
90 words
A device according to claim 1, wherein the second wire (20) is an eccentric wire for supporting said cutter (18), said eccentric wire (20) having a proximal end and a distal end, with an extension (32) attached to said distal end to establish a substantially right angle with said eccentric wire (20), and a ring (34) attached to said extension (32); and wherein the first wire (16) is a guide wire positioned in said ring (34) to permit sliding movement of said eccentric wire (20) along said guide wire (16).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
23 words
A device according to claim 6 further comprising means (24) for moving said cutter (18) in an arc around said guide wire (16).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
19 words
A device according to claim 6 or 7 wherein said extension (32) is integral with said eccentric wire (20).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
36 words
A device according to claim 6, 7 or 8 further comprising a sheath (30) having a first lumen (36) for supporting said guide wire (16) and a second lumen (38) for supporting said eccentric wire (20).
Claim 10
Independent Claim
33 words
A device according to any of claims 6 to 9 further comprising torque means (22) positioned over said eccentric wire (20) and fixedly attached to said cutter (18) for rotating said cutter (18).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
15 words
A device according to claim 10 wherein said torque means (22) comprises a hollow tube.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
30 words
A device according to claim 10 or 11 further comprising suction means operatively connected to said torque means (22) for removing clippings from the artery through said torque means (22).
Claim 13
Independent Claim
17 words
A device according to any of claims 6 to 12 wherein said guide wire (16) is steerable.
Claim 14
Independent Claim
137 words
A method for removing obstructive matter from a vessel, not being a vessel in a human or animal body, which method comprises the steps of: inserting a first wire (16) into the vessel across the obstructive matter; engaging an end of a second wire (20) with said first wire (16) for sliding movement of said end along said first wire (16); positioning a cutter (18) on said second wire (20) for movement of said cutter (18) with said second wire (20) along said first wire (16) to bring said cutter (18) into contact with the obstructive matter; rotating said cutter (18) to cut the obstructive matter; and manipulating said second wire (20) to move said cutter (18) in an arc about said first wire (16) to increase the portion of obstructive matter contacted by said cutter (18).
