Abstract

Abstract A balloon dilatation catheter (14) is provided with a fluted balloon (20) defining at least three wings (46). When the balloon collapses, it tends to assume the fluted configuration which defines a lower profile better adapted to pass through narrow channels, such as in endoscopes and guide catheters. The balloon is formed from a polymeric material in a method that involves the steps of tensioning the balloon to cause it to form flutes (44) while maintaining its interior under vacuum and subjecting the balloon, while so held, to heat and, thereafter, cooling the balloon while maintaining it in its tensioned, fluted configuration.

Claim 4
Dependent Claim 29 words
A dilatation catheter as defined in claims 1 or 2 wherein when said balloon is deflated it forms short wings foldable to a low profile about the catheter shaft.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 14 words
A balloon dilatation catheter as defined in claim 3 wherein the balloon is inelastic.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 17 words
A balloon dilatation catheter as defined in claim 4 wherein the balloon is formed from polyethylene terephthalate.

Claim 12
Dependent Claim 67 words
A balloon for a dilatation catheter comprising: a tubular polymeric member which, when distended, has a central elongate cylindrical portion, tapered conical members on the ends of the cylindrical portion and a cylindrical collar on each end of each conical portion; said balloon being formed to collapse under the influence of reduced internal pressure into a configuration defining at least three longitudinally extending flutes and alternating wings.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 14 words
A balloon as defined in claim 10 wherein the polymeric member is substantially inelastic.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 19 words
A balloon as defined in either of claims 10 or 11 wherein the balloon is formed from polyethylene terephthalate.

A method for forming a fluted balloon for a dilatation catheter comprising: forming a balloon from a polymeric material; tensioning the balloon by its ends, to cause it to form a plurality of at least three longitudinal flutes and alternating wings; while maintaining said tension to maintain said fluted configuration. heating the balloon; while maintaining said tension to form the flutes and wings, thereafter cooling the balloon.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 25 words
A method as defined in claim 13 further comprising: applying negative pressure to the interior of the balloon at least during the step of tensioning.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method as defined in claim 13 further comprising applying negative pressure to the interior of the balloon during the complete process.
Claim 19
Independent Claim 112 words
A method for performing a dilatation procedure in a lumen of a patient comprising: inserting a guiding conduit to a region to be dilated; providing a dilatation catheter having a balloon that collapses under the influence of vacuum to a configuration having at least three longitudinally extending flutes and alternating wings; deflating the balloon to said collapsed configuration; passing the catheter with collapsed balloon through the guide catheter and out of the distal end of the guide catheter; inflating the balloon to perform a dilatation and then deflating the balloon to said collapsed configuration; and removing the catheter through the guiding conduit while the wings of the balloon wrap about the catheter.
