Modular expandable single stage digital ATM switching network for high speed packet-switched information transfer
Abstract
A Modular expandable digital single-stage switching network in ATM (A synchronous T ransfer M ode) technology for a fast packet-switched information transfer, with a single type of switching module with storage function, the different by two operation modes (M1, M2) as pre-switching module or is operable as a termination switch module and has N first inputs, N extension inputs, N first outputs and N extension outputs. A first operating mode (M1) realizes the function of the coupling mode as an end switching module for switching N first input lines and N extension input lines on N first output lines, and a second operating mode (M2) realizes the function of the coupling Module implemented as a pre-switching module for pre-switching N first input lines and for connecting N extension input lines. The coupling module, which works as a pre-exchange module, can read in 2N packets and read out N packets at the same time. The switching module operating as a pre-switching mode processes only part of the header information of data packets with its header information filter in order to switch the packets to the relevant coupling matrix column, so that the lines of the matrix column of packets are shared for this matrix column. In order to avoid so-called packet overhauls, the order in time of packets arriving on one of the N first input lines of the coupling module working as a pre-switching module is occasionally determined by a spatial order on the N first output lines of the coupling module working as a pre-switching module replaced. The coupling module, which works as a termination switch module, can read 2N packets at the same time. The coupling module, which works as a termination switch module, processes another part of the header information with its header information filter (KF) for final switching to a matrix output.
