Abstract

Abstract A method for processing distributed application programs in SNA type networks including a host system having a virtual machine type Operating System and an Intelligent Work Station (IWS) provided with an Operating System that is capable of running two distributed application programs concurrently, in which two idle virtual machines, from a pool of run ready virtual machines that are created and managed by a Virtual Machine Pool Manager (VMPM), are each assigned to process a different one of the two application programs concurrently to prevent the distributed application programs from being serialized on one virtual machine at the host even though both application programs are being invoked by requests at the IWS terminal involving the same USER ID.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 253 words
A method for executing first and second distributed application programs in an SNA type data processing network that supports program to program communication in accordance with SNA Logical Unit 6.2 protocols and in which said application programs comprise first parts that are run on one terminal and second parts that are run on the host processor of said network in response to first and second requests to initiate LU 6.2 conversations between said terminal and said host involving respectively said first and second programs, said method comprising the following combination of sequential steps; A) establishing a virtual machine pool manager which functions to, (1) create at least two virtual machines at said host processor that are brought to a run ready state prior to receiving a said request, and (2) manage the dynamic assignments of said idle run ready virtual machines to process sequential said requests for LU 6.2 conversation requests from said one terminal involving said first and second application programs so that each said request is assigned to a different one of said idle virtual machines and said assigned virtual machines are returned to said pool at the end of a conversation in an idle state ready for a new assignment, and B) providing a pool manager data structure for use by said pool manager in the management of said virtual machines in said pool, whereby said application programs can be executed concurrently on different assigned virtual machines at said host whenever said application programs are being executed concurrently at said terminal.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 87 words
The method recited in Claim 1 in which said host processor has a virtual machine type Operating System including a programming module for automatically setting up a virtual machine with a predefined name during the starting up of said host and said step of establishing includes the further steps of; A) storing in said data structure a plurality of names for the virtual machines to be created by said pool manager, and B) automatically creating each said virtual machine during said starting up using said programming module.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 83 words
The method set forth in Claim 2 in which said step of providing includes the further step of, A) providing a multifield entry in said data structure for each said virtual machine name stored in said data structure including providing a name field for storing the name assigned to said virtual machine and providing a status field for indicating the status of said machine, and B) setting said status field to indicate an IDLE status at the end of said automatically creating step.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 86 words
The method recited in Claim 3 including the further step of A) issuing a first request from said terminal to said host for an LU 6.2 conversation between said first and second parts of said first application program, said request including a USERID, an identification of said first application program, and an identification of the Logical Unit to process said request, and B) determining at said host if said request is to be managed by said virtual pool manager by reference to said Logical Unit identification.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 87 words
The method recited in Claim 4, including the further step of; A) assigning one of said run ready virtual machines to process said request including the steps of (1) inspecting said data structure to identify the name of an idle virtual machine, (2) modifying said request, by replacing said identification of said Logical Unit with the name of said identified idle virtual machine, and, (3) updating said data structure to indicate the busy status of said assigned virtual machine, and the current assignment of said virtual machine.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 50 words
The method recited in Claim 5 in which said step of assigning further includes the step of, A) reissuing said modified request to said virtual machine identified in said modified request, and B) changing the name of said assigned virtual machine to the the USERID specified in said unmodified request.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 44 words
The method recited in Claim 6 further including the steps of; A) executing only one conversation of said application program on said assigned virtual machine, and B) returning said virtual machine to said pool for a subsequent assignment of executing another LU 6.2 conversation.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 38 words
The method recited in Claim 7 including the further step of , (A) updating said entry in said data structure to reflect that said virtual machine is again available to process another assignment involving an LU 6.2 request.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 66 words
The method recited in Claim 9 in which said step of issuing a request by one part of said application program for a conversation with a said second part of said application includes the further step of; A) issuing an LU 6.2 ALLOCATE verb including the name of the Logical Unit, the name of the Transaction Program and the USERID of the entity issuing said request.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 46 words
The method recited in Claim 9 in which said step of executing only one said conversation includes the further step of; A) issuing an LU 6.2 DEALLOCATE verb with said first or second part of said application program to cause said one conversation to be terminated.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 141 words
The method recited in Claim 10 in which said terminal is an Intelligent Work Station (IWS) type terminal provided with a multitasking type Operating System to permit said first and second applications to be run concurrently in said system further including the steps of; A) issuing at said terminal when a conversation involving said first application is active, a second request to initiate a second LU 6.2 conversation between said terminal and said host involving said second application and employing the same USERID as said first request, and B) processing said second request at said host by assigning with said pool manager another idle virtual machine from said pool to execute said second part of said second application program to permit two LU 6.2 conversations for said first and second applications respectively to run concurrently on both said terminal and said host.
