Abstract

Abstract A coextruded film having a matte surface layer is prepared by forming the layer from a blend of polyisobutylene and high density polyethylene. The film preferably has a heatseal layer on the other surface. In addition to having low gloss for consumer appeal, the matte surface layer has a medium coefficient of friction for good machinablility and excellent heat resistance to facilitate heatsealing. The film is especially useful as an overwrap for packaging consumer products.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 61 words
A coextruded film having a nonembossed matte surface layer having a gloss of less than ten percent, characterized in that the matte surface layer consists essentially of a blend of from about ten to forty percent polyisobutylene, fifty to ninety percent high density polyethylene, and zero to forty percent propylene homopolymer, the polyisobutylene having a molecular weight of at least 50,000.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 61 words
A coextruded film having a nonembossed matte surface layer having a gloss of less than ten percent, characterized in that the matte surface layer consists essentially of a blend of from about ten to forty percent polyisobutylene, fifty to ninety percent high density polyethylene, and zero to forty percent propylene homopolymer, the polyisobutylene having a molecular weight of at least 50,000.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 23 words
The film of claim 1 characterized in having a coefficient of friction between the matte surface layers of between about 0.2 and 0.7.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 18 words
The film of claim 2 characterized in that the coefficient of friction is between about 0.3 and 0.5.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 15 words
The film of claim 3 characterized in having a heatseal layer on the opposite surface.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 43 words
The film of claim 4 characterized in that the matte surface layer has excellent heat resistance, whereby the heatseal layer may be heatsealed to itself using heatseal jaws having a temperature of 260°C without having the jaws stick to the matte surface layer.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 17 words
The film of claims 1-5 characterized in having a thickness of from about 1.0 and 3.0 mils.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 22 words
The film of claim 6, characterized in that the thickness of the matte surface layer is between about 0.1 and 0.3 mil.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 19 words
The film of claim 7 characterized in having three layers wherein the third layer is a polyolefin core layer.
