Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 22
Claim 1
Independent Claim 75 words
A method of injection molding a wet, hygroscopic ionomer, comprising directly injection molding said wet ionomer using a reciprocating two-stage vented barrier screw having a barrier flight and a subsequent venting zone, wherein the barrier flight has a melt channel and a solids channel, the melt channel being only partially filled with melted ionomer, whereby the vapor phase adjacent to melted ionomer in the barrier flight has access to said venting zone and vents therethrough.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 75 words
A method of injection molding a wet, hygroscopic ionomer, comprising directly injection molding said wet ionomer using a reciprocating two-stage vented barrier screw having a barrier flight and a subsequent venting zone, wherein the barrier flight has a melt channel and a solids channel, the melt channel being only partially filled with melted ionomer, whereby the vapor phase adjacent to melted ionomer in the barrier flight has access to said venting zone and vents therethrough.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 19 words
A method of claim 1, wherein the solids channel of the barrier flight is closed-ended at the downstream end.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 24 words
A method of claim 2, wherein said melt channel increases in width and depth from the beginning to the end of the barrier channel.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 39 words
A method of claim 2, wherein said screw rotates at an rpm rate which is higher than the rpm rate at which a single-stage reciprocating screw operably rotates when used to injection mold the hygroscopic ionomer in dry form.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 23 words
A method of claim 2, wherein the amount of water contained in the ionomer is that achieved after substantial equilibration with ambient conditions.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 21 words
A method of claim 2, wherein the ionomer is fed into the barrier screw under the control of a starve feeder.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 25 words
A method of claim 2, wherein the ionomer is fed into the barrier screw at a rate less than the conveying capacity of the screw.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 25 words
A method of claim 4, wherein the ionomer is fed into the barrier screw at a rate less than the conveying capacity of the screw.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 12 words
A method of claim 2, wherein said ionomer is Surlyn R .
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 12 words
A method of claim 8, wherein said ionomer is Surlyn R .
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 18 words
A method of claim 2, wherein said screw has a second stage metering section of the Pulsar™ configuration.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 18 words
A method of claim 8, wherein the barrier flight has the design substantially as shown in Figure 3.
Claim 14
Independent Claim 72 words
A method of extruding a wet hygroscopic ionomer comprising directly extruding said wet ionomer using a two-stage vented barrier screw having a barrier flight and a subsequent venting zone, wherein the barrier flight has a melt channel and a solids channel, the melt channel being only partially filled with melted ionomer, whereby the vapor phase adjacent to melted ionomer in the barrier flight has access to said venting zone and vents therethrough.
Claim 15
Independent Claim 72 words
A method of extruding a wet hygroscopic ionomer comprising directly extruding said wet ionomer using a two-stage vented barrier screw having a barrier flight and a subsequent venting zone, wherein the barrier flight has a melt channel and a solids channel, the melt channel being only partially filled with melted ionomer, whereby the vapor phase adjacent to melted ionomer in the barrier flight has access to said venting zone and vents therethrough.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 19 words
A method of claim 13, wherein the solids channel of the barrier flight is closed-ended at the downstream end.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 24 words
A method of claim 14, wherein said melt channel increases in width and depth from the beginning to the end of the barrier flight.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 23 words
A method of claim 14, wherein the amount of water contained in the ionomer is that achieved after substantial equilibration with ambient conditions.
Claim 19
Dependent Claim 21 words
A method of claim 14, wherein the ionomer is fed into the barrier screw under the control of a starve feeder.
Claim 20
Dependent Claim 25 words
A method of claim 14, wherein the ionomer is fed into the barrier screw at a rate less than the conveying capacity of the screw.
Claim 21
Dependent Claim 12 words
A method of claim 14, wherein said ionomer is Surlyn R .
Claim 22
Dependent Claim 18 words
A method of claim 14, wherein said screw has a second stage metering section of the Pulsar™ configuration.
