Abstract

Abstract A catheter system (20) includes a stylus (26) having a first generally conically shaped end (48) tapering to a point and a second end, and a cannula (24) having an inside dimeter for slidably receiving the stylus (26) and an outside diameter. The cannula (24) has a first end (40) and a second end, and a catheter (22) has an inside diameter for slidably receiving the outside diameter of the cannula (24) and first and second ends. The second ends of the stylus (26), cannula (24) and catheter (22) includes a relative placement mechanism such that, when the stylus (26), cannula (24) and catheter (22) are assembled for insertion, the first end (48) of the stylus (26) projects from the first end (40) of the cannula (24). The first end of the catheter (22) includes a first end wall which is generally frustoconically shaped, the frustoconical shape of the first end wall of the catheter (22) being substantially coincident with the conical shape of the first end (48) of the stylus (26). The first end of the catheter (22) is adapted for insertion into a region of a wearer's body. The second end is adopted for access to the catheter (22) from outside the wearer's body. The catheter (22) includes a generally elliptical port (60) through its sidewall adjacent the first end. The major axis of the port (60) extends generally longitudinally of the catheter (22) and the minor axis of the port extends generally transversely of the catheter (22).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 145 words
A catheter system including a stylus having a first generally conically shaped end tapering to a point and a second end, a cannula having an inside diameter for slidably receiving the stylus and an outside diameter, the cannula having a first end and a second end, and a catheter having an inside diameter for slidably receiving the outside diameter of the cannula and first and second ends, the second ends of the stylus, cannula and catheter including relative placement means such that, when the stylus, cannula and catheter are assembled for insertion, the first end of the stylus projects from the first end of the cannula, the catheter first end including a first end wall which is generally frustoconically shaped, the frustoconical shape of the first end wall of the catheter being substantially coincident with the conical shape of the first end of the stylus.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 145 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 53 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the inside diameter of the catheter is defined by an inner sidewall, the catheter further including an outer sidewall defining an outside diameter of the catheter, and the catheter includes at least one port extending between its outer sidewall and its inner sidewall adjacent its first end.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 39 words
The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the port is generally elliptical, the major axis of the ellipse extending generally longitudinally of the apparatus and the minor axis of the ellipse extending generally transversely of the apparatus around the catheter.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 24 words
The apparatus of claim 1, 2 or 3 including a plurality of ports spaced longitudinally from each other along the sidewall of the catheter.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 90 words
A catheter comprising a generally right cylindrical cross-section tube having an inside dimension, an outside dimension and a sidewall therebetween, the catheter having a first end for insertion into a region of a wearer's body, and a second end for access to the catheter from outside the wearer's body, the catheter including means defining a generally elliptical port through the sidewall adjacent the first end, the major axis of the port extending generally longitudinally of the catheter and the minor axis of the port extending generally transversely of the catheter.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 90 words
A catheter comprising a generally right cylindrical cross-section tube having an inside dimension, an outside dimension and a sidewall therebetween, the catheter having a first end for insertion into a region of a wearer's body, and a second end for access to the catheter from outside the wearer's body, the catheter including means defining a generally elliptical port through the sidewall adjacent the first end, the major axis of the port extending generally longitudinally of the catheter and the minor axis of the port extending generally transversely of the catheter.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 24 words
The apparatus of claim 5 including means defining a plurality of such elliptical ports spaced longitudinally along the catheter adjacent the first end thereof.
Claim 9
