Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim
55 words
A process for the lyophilization of erythrocytes having a cell membrane, comprising immersing a plurality of erythrocytes in a solution which includes a monosaccharide, which is capable of permeating the membrane of the erythrocytes, in a concentration of from 0.5 to 4 molar; freezing the solution; and drying the erythrocytes by sublimation of the water.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
78 words
A process for the lyophilization of erythrocytes, comprising: immersing a plurality of erythrocytes in a water solution which includes: a monosaccharide which is present in the solution in a concentration of from 0.5 molar up to 4 molar, and a polymer having a molecular weight of from 10K to 360K which is present in a concentration of from 0.1 millimolar up to saturation in the solution; freezing the solution; and drying the erythrocytes by sublimation of the water.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
12 words
A process of claim 2 wherein the polymer is polyvinylpyrrolidone or dextran.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
19 words
A process of any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the monosaccharide is selected from pentoses and hexoses.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
22 words
A process of any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein the monosaccharide is selected from xylose, glucose, ribose, mannose and fructose.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
25 words
A process of any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the monosaccharide is present in the solution in a concentration of about 2 molar.
Claim 7
Independent Claim
51 words
A medium for the lyophilization of erythrocytes, comprising a solution which includes: a monosaccharide which is present in a concentration of from 0.5 molar up to 4 molar, and a polymer having a molecular weight of from 10K to 360K which is present in a concentration of at least 0.1 millimolar.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
22 words
A medium of claim 7 and further defined by the specific feature(s) of any one or more of claims 3 to 6.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
40 words
The use of (a) a carbohydrate which is biologically compatible with erythrocytes and which is capable of permeating the membrane thereof, and/or (b) a water soluble polymer which is biologically compatible with erythrocytes, in forming a medium for erythrocyte lyophilization.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
19 words
The use of claim 9 wherein the carbohydrate is selected from pentoses and hexoses and/or the polymer is polyvinylpyrrolidone.
