Abstract A naphthalene compound of formula (I) and a liquid crystal composition containing the same: wherein X represents hydrogen or halogen, Y and Z independently represent a monovalent group selected from: wherein W represents hydrogen or halogen, R represents an alkyl group having 6 to 18 carbon atoms, provided that at least one of Y and Z represents the optically active alkyl group of formula (II): -(CH₂) n -* H-(CH₂) m -CH₃ (II) wherein A is alkyl, alkoxy, halogen or fluoroalkyl, n is an integer of 0 to 3, m is an integer of 3 to 6, and *C represents an asymmetric carbon.
