Abstract

Abstract External beam radiation therapy of cancer and other abnormal proliferative processes, and immunosuppression of transplant candidates, is improved using cytokines to prevent, mitigate or reverse adverse radiation-induced toxicity, especially to hematopoietic cells. A preferred cytokine is IL-1. Higher doses of radiation can be administered and tolerated by the patient and dose-limiting marrow toxicity can be prevented, palliated or reversed using adjunct cytokine therapy.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 126 words
The use of an amount effective for substantially preventing, mitigating or reversing such hematopoietic or myeloid toxicity of a differentiation/maturation-inducing cytokine, in the preparation of an agent for use in a method of external beam radiotherapy of cancer, or another abnormal proliferative process, or for immunosuppression of a transplant candidate, wherein a human patient suffering from an abnormal proliferative lesion, or a transplant candidate, susceptible to treatment with external beam radiotherapy, is treated with a therapeutic dose of external beam radiation which also produces hematopoietic or myeloid toxicity, wherein said method further comprises administering to said patient an amount effective for substantially preventing, mitigating or reversing such hematopoietic or myeloid toxicity of a differentiation/maturation-inducing cytokine, prior to, simultaneously with, or subsequent to exposure to said radiation.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 126 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 11 words
The use according to claim 1, wherein said disease is cancer.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
The use according to claim 1, wherein said disease is a non-cancerous abnormal proliferative process.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 15 words
The use according to claim 1, wherein said radiotherapy is administered to a transplant candidate.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 17 words
The use according to any of claims 2, 3 or 4, wherein said cytokine is a lymphokine.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 17 words
The use acccrding to any of claims 2, 3 or 4, wherein said cytokine is interleukin-1 (IL-1).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 25 words
The use according to any of claims 2, 3 or 4, wherein said cytokine is a colony stimulating factor (CSF), interleukin-2 (IL-2) or interleukin-3 (IL-3).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 22 words
The use according to any of claims 2, 3 or 4, wherein said cytokine is administered prior to administration of said radiotherapy.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 22 words
The use according to any of claims 2, 3 or 4, wherein said cytokine is administered concommitantly with administration of said radiotherapy.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 22 words
The use according to any of claims 2, 3 or 4, wherein said cytokine is administered subsequent to administration of said radiotherapy.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 20 words
The use according to claim 10, wherein said cytokine is administered at least 3 days after administration of said radiotherapy.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 18 words
The use according to any of claims 2, 3 or 4, wherein a combination of cytokines is administered.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 37 words
The use of a differentiation/maturation inducing cytokine in the preparation of an agent for use in a method of external beam radiotherapy of cancer or other abnormal proliferative process, or immunosuppression of a transplant candidate, in humans.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 37 words
The use of a differentiation/maturation inducing cytokine in the preparation of an agent for use in a method of external beam radiotherapy of cancer or other abnormal proliferative process, or immunosuppression of a transplant candidate, in humans.
