Abstract

Abstract A plate (11) 0.05 - 0.3 mm thick is made of a solid electrolyte, e.g. zirconia containing 2-5 wt % of yttria, and is coated on one side with a cathode layer (12) of material resistant to 0₂, e.g. made from powdered LaSr .MnO₃ and on the other side with an anode layer (13) of material resistant to H₂, each layer being porous to gases and electrically conductive; an assembly of plates (11) is made up with alternating interconnectors (14) having grooves (14a, 14b) on each side to define gas passages; the interconnectors and plates are made of conductive heat-resistant material, preferably of an alloy containing Co, Cr, Ni, Fe or Mn coated with a composite oxide of La and an alkaline earth metal, or of a noble metal. The ends of the assembly are formed by terminals (15, 16) grooved only on their inner faces. The parts can be sealed together with glass paste, and gas supply lines (23-26, Fig 5) are provided externally. When the cell is heated at 1000 o C and H₂ and O₂ are supplied to the anodes and cathodes, a current is generated between the terminals (15, 16). The cells are simple of low internal resistance and efficient in operation.
