Abstract

Abstract Acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive that is especially suited for adhering to plasticized PVC and similar substrates. The adhesive comprises 50-99% butyl acrylate, 0-49% copolymerizable vinyl compound, 1-20% α-β ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, a crosslinker, and preferably up to 50% of a tackifier.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 76 words
A pressure-sensitive adhesive that adheres well to plasticized polyvinyl chloride and similar plasticized polymeric substrates, even after extensive aging, comprising an acrylic copolymer having a weight average molecular weight of more than 600,000, the monomer components of said copolymer comprising 50-99 weight % butyl acrylate, 0-49 weight % of at least one copolymerizable vinyl compound, 1-20 weight % α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid, and sufficient isocyanate crosslinking agent to crosslink 10-60% of the polar groups in the copolymer.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 76 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 16 words
The pressure-sensitive adhesive of claim 1 wherein the molecular weight of the acrylic copolymer is 800,000-900,000.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 17 words
The pressure-sensitive adhesive of claim 1 or 2 wherein the copolymer contains 70-95 weight percent butyl acrylate.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 17 words
The pressure-sensitive adhesive of any preceding claim wherein the copolymer contains 10-37 weight percent copolymerizable vinyl compound.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 22 words
The pressure-sensitive adhesive of any preceding claim wherein sufficient isocyanate is present to crosslink 30-50% of the polar groups in the copolymer.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 23 words
The pressure-sensitive adhesive of any preceding claim wherein the adhesive contains up to 50 weight percent, based on the copolymer, of a tackifier.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 18 words
The pressure-sensitive adhesive of claim 6 wherein the adhesive contains up to 20 weight percent of the tackifier.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 13 words
The pressure-sensitive adhesive of claim 7 wherein the tackifier is a rosin ester.
