Abstract

Abstract The present invention provides for a process for producing a stabilized latex characterized by the steps of: a) mixing latex forming monomers, under emulsion polymerization conditions to form a hydrophilic, low molecular weight, first stage polymer reaction mixture capable of becoming water soluble upon pH adjustment; b) contacting said reaction mixture containing the first stage polymer with latex forming monomers under emulsion polymerization conditions sufficient to form a second stage hydrophobic polymer which forms an invert core-shell emulsion with said first stage polymers and c) adjusting the pH of the emulsion to dissolve the first stage polymer, as well as the latex produced thereby. o

Claim 2
Dependent Claim 92 words
A process for producing a stabilized latex characterized by the steps of: a) mixing latex forming monomers, under emulsion polymerization conditions to form a hydrophilic, low molecular weight, first stage polymer reaction mixture capable of becoming water soluble upon pH adjustment; b) contacting said reaction mixture containing the first stage polymer with latex forming monomers under emulsion polymerization conditions sufficient to form a second stage hydrophobic polymer which forms an invert core-shell emulsion with said first stage polymers and c) adjusting the pH of the emulsion to dissolve the first stage polymer.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 31 words
The process according to claim 1 characterized in that the hydrophilic first stage polymer is formed from at least one water insoluble monomer and a pH sensitive functional group containing monomer.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 48 words
The process according to claim 1 or 2 characterized in that the functional group-containing monomer is selected from the group consisting of methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, maleic acid, crotonic acid, itaconic acid, fumaric acid, vinylbenzoic acid, isopropenyl benzoic acid, vinyl pyridines, dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate, and t-butyl aminoethyl methacrylate.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 43 words
The process according to claims 1, 2 or 3 characterized in that the ratio of water insoluble monomer to functional group-containing monomer in the first stage polymer is about from 10:1 to 1:3, preferably 10:1 to 1:1 and most preferably 1:1 to 3:2.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 38 words
The process according to claims 2, 3 or 4 characterized by including employing a chain transfer agent preferably brometrichloromethane, to regulate the molecular weight of the first stage polymer, or the molecular weight of the second stage polymer.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 57 words
The process of any of claims 1-5 characterized in that the second stage hydrophobic polymer is formed from at least one insoluble monomer, or at least one insoluble monomer and an amount of a pH sensitive functional group containing monomer such that a second stage polymer will not be solubilized upon dissolution of the first stage polymer.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 65 words
The process according to any of claims 1-6 characterized in that the water insoluble monomer is selected from the group consisting of styrene, methyl styrene, a-methyl styrene, ethyl styrene, isopropyl styrene, tertiary butyl styrene, ethyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, butyl methacrylate, 2-ethyl hexylacrylate, ethyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate, open chain conjugated dienes, hydroxyethyl methacrylate, hydoxyethyl acrylate, methylol acrylamide, glycidyl acrylate and glycidyl methacrylate.
