Abstract

Abstract A semi-interpenetrating polymer system made up of a mixture of a moisture-curable polymer component and a noncrosslinked elastomer component which when exposed to moisture becomes thermoset. The thermoset product may be essentially non-foamed or highly foamed and is suitable for sealing gaskets, sheet stock, tubing, and as a sealant-encapsulant among other end uses.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 114 words
A polymeric composition comprising: (a) a first component which is a primary polymer having end groups that are capable of chemically reacting with each other in the presence of moisture to form a derivative polymer having a longer average chain length than said primary polymer; (b) a second component which is a noncross-linked elastomer that is not substantially chemically reactive with itself or with said first component in the presence of moisture, wherein said first and said second components are intimately mixed, said composition, when maintained in the bsence of moisture and other active hydrogen donor materials, being readily extrudable and otherwise conventionally moldable thermoplastic composition but, upon exposure to moisture, becoming essentially thermoset.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 114 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 31 words
A composition according to claim 1, wherein said second component is a styrene-isoprene-styrene block polymer, a styrene-butadiene-styrene block polymer, an isoprene homopolymer or a polyvinyl chloride, polyisobutylene, styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene, or ethylene-propylene rubber.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 30 words
A composition according to claim 1 or 2, which, when exposed to a relative humidity of 10% to 100% for at least 5 minutes, becomes an essentially thermoset elastomeric material.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
A composition according to any one of the preceding claims, which, when submerged in water at 0°C. to 100°C., becomes an essentially thermoset elastomeric material.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 24 words
A composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein said first component has a polyester backbone and isocyanate or trialkoxysilyl end groups.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 85 words
A composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein said composition has been exposed to moisture so as to render said composition essentially thermoset whereby the amount of unextrudable material exceeds the original amount of the uncured but curable prepolymer in said composition, the amount of essentially thermoset material being determined by extracting by refluxing the material for one hour in a solvent that would have dissolved all of said first and second components prior to exposure of the composition to said moisture.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 45 words
A composition according to claim 6, which has a tensile strength of at least 400 kPa, a force to compress by 30% of its thickness of not more than 80 kPa, and a compression set of not more than 0.5% at either -20°C. or 23°C.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 44 words
A composition according to claim 6 or 7, in the form of a sealing gasket for a drum cover, an essentially nonfoamed sheet or tape, foamed sheet or tape, tubing, or a sealant-encapsulant about an electrical connector including one or more wires contained therein.
