Abstract

Abstract In a data processing system using a read-modified-write process, data from a store is modified by data from a CPU and the modified data returned to the store. The data from the store includes error detecting and correcting bits, and, substantially simultaneously with a modifying operation, the data from the store is checked. If an error is detected, the modified data is not returned to the store, and the checked data is corrected and the corrected data is then modified by the data from the CPU and returned to the store.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 119 words
A data processing system including a data store (2) for storing data groups, a digital data source (1), means (11) for combining a data group from the source with a data group read from the store and for returning a combined data group to the store, characterised by means (14, 15) for checking each said data group read from the store, means (16) for correcting an erroneous data group, means (12) for preventing return to the store of a combined data group corresponding to a said erroneous data group, and means (24) for directing a corrected data group to the means for combining for combination with the data group from the source previously combined with the erroneous data group.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 119 words
A data processing system including a data store (2) for storing data groups, a digital data source (1), means (11) for combining a data group from the source with a data group read from the store and for returning a combined data group to the store, characterised by means (14, 15) for checking each said data group read from the store, means (16) for correcting an erroneous data group, means (12) for preventing return to the store of a combined data group corresponding to a said erroneous data group, and means (24) for directing a corrected data group to the means for combining for combination with the data group from the source previously combined with the erroneous data group.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 80 words
A system according to claim 1 in which each data group from the store comprises data digits and error checking and correcting digits, and said means for checking and correcting is responsive to the error checking and correcting digits to generate said corrected data group, said system including a check bit generator (6) coupled to the output of the combining means for adding error detecting and correcting digits to each combined data group prior to its return to the store.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 55 words
A system according to claim 1 or claim 2 including means (8) for buffering each data group from the source, and means (10) for directing it from the buffer to the combining means either once if no error is detected in the corresponding group from the store or repeatedly if an error is so detected.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 33 words
A system according to any one of claims 1 to 3, in which the combined data group is returned to the same location in the store from which the data group was read.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 45 words
A system according to any one of claims 1 to 4, in which said data group from the source has fewer digits than said data group from the store and is combined with a like number of digits within the group read from the store.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 82 words
A method of operating a data processing system for combining a data group from a store with a data group from a source, comprising the steps of: simultaneously combining the groups and checking the group from the store; and if no error is detected, returning the combined data to the store; and if an error is detected, correcting the data from the store and combining the corrected data with said data from the source, and returning the combined data to the store.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 82 words
A method of operating a data processing system for combining a data group from a store with a data group from a source, comprising the steps of: simultaneously combining the groups and checking the group from the store; and if no error is detected, returning the combined data to the store; and if an error is detected, correcting the data from the store and combining the corrected data with said data from the source, and returning the combined data to the store.
