Abstract

Abstract An electrical socket for interconnecting a pin grid array to a printed circuit board includes an insulative housing (4) having a plurality of apertures (6) extending between upper (8) and lower faces, the socket apertures (6) have disposed therein, terminals for receiving the pins of the pin grid array in an electrically interconnected condition. A pin receiving portion of the terminal includes a circular band portion (34) with resilient contact arms (38) extending downwardly therefrom. The band portion (34) includes a seam (36) which allows for the expansion of the seam (36) to relieve the stress in the band (34) caused by the deflection of the contact arms (38). The center of the circular band portion (34) is also movable to allow the pin receiving portion to realign itself to allow the reception of misaligned pins.

Claim 2
Dependent Claim 216 words
An electrical socket connector (2) for interconnecting a pin grid array (70) to a printed circuit board, the pin grid array (70) including an insulative carrier member (72) having a leadless chip receiving cavity in either of an upper or lower face and an array of pins (78) attached to the upper face, the socket (2) comprising an insulating housing (4) having an upper carrier receiving face (8) and a lower printed circuit board receiving face (16), the housing (4) having a plurality of apertures (6) extending between the two housing faces (8, 16); and a plurality of electrical terminals (30) disposed within the apertures (6), each including a longitudinal strap portion (42) which includes an integral pin receiving portion (32) for electrical interconnection with one of the pins (78) of the pin grid array (70), and an elongate tail portion (50) extending beyond the printed circuit board receiving face (16) for electrical connection with a printed circuit board, the connector being characterized in that: the pin receiving portion (32) including a band portion (34) disposed proximate to the upper carrier receiving face (8) and having resilient contact arms (38) extending therefrom with a free end extending downwardly into the aperture (6), the contact arms (38) converging generally inwardly towards the printed circuit board receiving face.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 17 words
The socket of claim 1 characterized in that the band portion (34) is generally circular in profile.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 26 words
The socket of claim 1 characterized in that the at least two resilient contact arms (38) include radiused contact portions (40) adjacent to the free ends.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 23 words
The socket of claim 3 characterized in that the strap portion (42) is inwardly directed to form a further resilient contact member (44).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 36 words
The socket of claim 4 characterized in that a point of contact on the further resilient contact member (44) of the strap portion is axially offset from points of contact on the radiused contact portions (40).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 27 words
The socket of claim 2 characterized in that the band portion (34) is stamped from a flat plate and is formed to include an open seam (36).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 40 words
The socket of claim 6 characterized in that the band portion (34) is smaller than an inner diameter (14) of the aperture (6) thereby allowing the band portion (34) to expand and relieve stress within the pin receiving portion (32).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 46 words
The socket of claim 1 characterized in that the terminals (30) include retention means which comprise second band portions (46) which are disposed between the pin receiving portions (32) and the tail portions (50) and are profiled for interferingly fitting within one of the apertures (6).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 37 words
The socket of claim 6 characterized the band portions have outer profiles which are less than inner profiles of the apertures (6) thereby allowing movement of centers of the band portions (34) relative to the apertures (6).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 118 words
The socket of claim 1 characterized in that the pin receiving portions (32) comprise upper band portions (34) which are stamped from flat blanks and formed to include seams (36), the seams (36) and the strap portions (34) being substantially diametrically opposed from each other, the pin receiving portions (32) further including at least two contact arms (38) extending downwardly from the band portion (34) with each of the contact arms (38) being on opposite sides of the seam (36), although not diametrically opposed; the strap portions (34) being inwardly directed at a position adjacent to the pin receiving portions (32) to form further resilient contact portions (44) in cooperation with the at least two contact arms (38).
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 34 words
The socket (2) of claim 10 characterized in that each of the contact arms (38) is radially positioned 120 degrees from the strap portion (42) and on opposite sides of the strap portion (42).
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 85 words
The socket (2) of claim 1 characterized in that each terminal (30) includes an elongate strap portion (42) having upper (34) and lower (46) circular band portions formed integrally with side edges of the strap portion (42) and each of the circular band portions (34,36) extending generally transversely of the strap portion (42), the lower circular band (46) being larger in a free state than the diameter (14) of the apertures (6), thereby providing spring loaded retention of the terminals (30) within the apertures (6);
