Abstract

Abstract A rotary electric drive device for use in a vehicle anti-skid braking system has a rotary armature (4) supported by a thrust race (20) in relation to a housing (1). One part (22) of the thrust race has external teeth 24 for co-action with a pawl 25 which is disengaged from the teeth for one direction of rotation of the armature but engages the teeth during rotation in the other direction to lock the race part (22) to the housing. When this happens, slipping occurs between opposed contiguous faces (4A, 22A) of the armature and part (22) respectively in order to dissipate some of the rotational energy of the armature when the drive device is de-energised.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 63 words
A rotary electric device comprising a rotary armature support means (20) supporting the armature for rotation relative to fixed structure (1), and restraint means (22, 24) permitting free rotation of the armature in one direction of rotation, characterised in that said restraint means (22, 24) acts to cause resistance to reverse rotation, at least during a period within which the device is de-energised.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 63 words
A rotary electric device comprising a rotary armature support means (20) supporting the armature for rotation relative to fixed structure (1), and restraint means (22, 24) permitting free rotation of the armature in one direction of rotation, characterised in that said restraint means (22, 24) acts to cause resistance to reverse rotation, at least during a period within which the device is de-energised.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 62 words
A device according to Claim 1, characterised in that said restraint means (22, 24) acts to lock said armature support means (20) against reverse rotation, said support means (20) providing a surface (22A) frictionally engaged by a surface (4A) associated with the armature (4) in order to provide said resistance to reverse rotation of the armature during locking of said support means.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 44 words
A device according to Claim 1 or Claim 2 characterised in that a part (22) of said support means (20) is provided with teeth (24) which co-act with a pawl (25) to lock said part (22) against rotation at least during said de-energised period.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 81 words
A device according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, characterised in that the support means includes a pair of races (21, 22), one (21) of which is fixed and the other (22) of which supports the armature (4) for rotation relative to the race (21) by way of interposed rolling members (23), and in that the race (22) is provided with teeth (24) co-acting with a pawl (25) to lock said race (22) against rotation at least during said de-energised period.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 103 words
A device according to Claim 3 or Claim 4, characterised in that the pawl (25) is urged towards an operative locking position and is provided with teeth (25A) complementary with the teeth (24) and meshing with the latter to lock said part (22) against rotation, flanks of the teeth (24, 25A) being inclined so that when the pawl is urged against an abutment surface (A) by rotation of the armature in its normal direction of rotation, the teeth (25A) of the ratchet ride along the inclined flanks of the teeth (24) to disengage from the latter and unlock the armature (4) for rotation.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 38 words
A device according to any one Claims 3 to 5 characterised in that said pawl (25) is urged by contact with a fixed inclined surface (B) into engagement with said teeth (24) during reverse rotation of the armature.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 37 words
A device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the armature (4) is permitted a predetermined amount of free reverse movement (X), prior to the commencement of restraining action by the restraint means.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 47 words
A device according to Claim 6, characterised in that the pawl (25) is located within a recess (27) of a fixed part (1), one circumferentially facing surface (A) of the recess being said abutment surface and an opposed surface of the recess forming said inclined surface (B).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 61 words
A device according to Claim 8, characterised in that the spacing between the opposed surfaces (A) and (B) is chosen so as to permit the pawl a predetermined amount of movement (X) before its engagement with the surface (B), thereby permitting the armature (4) a degree of free reverse movement prior to the commencement of restraining action by the restraint means.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 44 words
A device according to Claim 4, characterised in that the pawl (37) is pivoted on a fixed part (35) and engaged with teeth (34) on a relatively rotatable part (31) which supports the armature shaft (30) for rotation relative to said fixed part (35).
Claim 12
Independent Claim 48 words
A device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the armature (4) and a member (5) driven thereby are relatively supported telescopically by way of a screw thread mechanism (6, 7) such that rotation of the armature causes corresponding axial movement of said member.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 30 words
A device according to Claim 11 characterised in that the thread mechanism incorporates a ball race (6) between thread formations associated respectively with the armature (4) and driven member (5).
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 53 words
A device according to Claim 11 or Claim 12, characterised in that the driven member (5) is a piston movable by rotation of the armature to vary the volume of the chamber (10) connected, in use, to a brake actuator for modifying the braking presure thereof in response to signals from anti-skid means.
