Abstract
Abstract Data storage apparatus in which the concentric tracks on a disc are divided into bands (B₀,B₁). A plurality of encoders (7) are used to record data of different densities using different run length limited codes depending on the radial position of the band of tracks. A complementary plurality of decoders (9) are used to generate the decoded read signal.

Total Claims: 3
Claim 1
Independent Claim
122 words
Data storage apparatus in which binary information is recorded on concentric tracks of a disc and in which the tracks of the disc are grouped into a plurality of bands characterised by including a plurality of encoders (7), each associated with one of the bands of tracks and each encoding binary input data in a different run length limited code to the other encoders; a plurality of decoders (9) each one associated with one of the bands of tracks and with one of the plurality of encoders; a write driver circuit (2) and means (8) to select the output of one of the encoders in accordance with a head position signal and to pass the selected output to the write driver circuit.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
58 words
Data storage apparatus as claimed in claim 1 including a detector (4) for feeding signals read from a disk to the plurality of decoders (9) and means (10) for selecting the output of one of the decoders in accordance with a head position signal and to pass the selected output to a data storage apparatus control system (1).
