Abstract
Abstract In known methods for determining charges, the viewer must pay for an entire programme contribution even if he or she is following it only in parts. In the novel method, the viewer should be able to view a desired programme contribution wholly or partially and should only need to pay for the actual viewing time. For this purpose, either a charge signal per unit time or a clock signal, the transmission rate of which can be controlled, is inserted into each individual programme contribution by the transmitter. At the receiver end, the charge signal per unit time or the clock signal is used for debiting a credit account. <IMAGE>
