Abstract

Abstract A gas sensor is constructed of a ceramic substrate (1), supporting heating elements (2) on a surface. The heating elements (2) are covered by an insulating layer (3) on which electrodes (6) are supported. The electrodes (6) are in contact with a gas sensitive catalyst layer (8) to detect electric current induced therein. The performance of the sensor is enhanced by the improved electrode heating of this construction while manufacture is improved.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 59 words
A gas sensor comprising, a ceramic substrate (1) a heater (2) on a surface of the substrate electrodes (6) supported by the substrate (1) and arranged to detect an electric current induced in a gas sensitive catalyst layer (8), characterised in that an insulating layer (3) overlies the heater (2) and the electrodes (6) overlie the insulating layer (3).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 59 words
A gas sensor comprising, a ceramic substrate (1) a heater (2) on a surface of the substrate electrodes (6) supported by the substrate (1) and arranged to detect an electric current induced in a gas sensitive catalyst layer (8), characterised in that an insulating layer (3) overlies the heater (2) and the electrodes (6) overlie the insulating layer (3).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 32 words
A gas sensor according to claim 1 characterised in that a heater (2a) is supported on another surface of the substrate (1) and is thermally insulated by an overlaying insulating layer (3a).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 21 words
A gas sensor according to claim 1 or claim 2 characterised in that the heater (2) is made of tungsten-platinum alloy.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 62 words
A gas sensor comprising a substrate (1), a heater (2) formed on the surface of the substrate (1), electrodes (6) supported by the substrate (1) and arranged to detect an electric current induced in a gas sensitive catalyst layer (8) supported by the substrate characterised in that a layer of insulation (3) is provided to overlie and insulate at least the heater.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 62 words
A gas sensor comprising a substrate (1), a heater (2) formed on the surface of the substrate (1), electrodes (6) supported by the substrate (1) and arranged to detect an electric current induced in a gas sensitive catalyst layer (8) supported by the substrate characterised in that a layer of insulation (3) is provided to overlie and insulate at least the heater.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 80 words
A method of producing a gas sensor constructed according to claim 1 comprising the steps of; forming a substrate, forming a heater on a surface of the substrate, forming a gas sensitive layer supported by the substrate, forming electrodes in contact with the gas sensitive layer to detect an electric current induced in the gas sensitive layer, and characterised by the steps of forming the electrodes and gas sensitive layer overlaying an insulating layer which is formed on the heater.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 29 words
A method according to claim 5 characterised by the step of depositing a heater on another surface of the substrate and covering the other heater with an insulating layer.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 34 words
A method according to claim 5 or claim 6 characterised by the step of first applying all the layers, heaters and electrodes to the substrate and subsequently firing the gas sensor to fix them.
