Abstract
Abstract A printer (1) is equipped with an automatic initial sheet-setting function by which an already loaded sheet (P) that has overrun the initial setting position can be set at the initial setting position. If a sheet sensor (35) detects a sheet (P) when an initial sheet-setting key (69) is operated, the sheet (P) is first fed backward until the sensor (35) does not detect the sheet (P), and then fed forward a predetermined distance so that the sheet (P) is set at the initial setting position.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim
131 words
A printer comprising: a sheet-feeding means for feeding a sheet along a feed path including a printing position; a sheet sensor, provided upstream of the printing position with respect to the forward sheet feed direction, for detecting the sheet; an initial sheet-setting controller, which, in use, responds to an external initial sheet-setting command, to cause the feeding means to feed sheets forwards along the feed path in such a manner that if the sheet sensor initially detects no sheet a sheet is fed until the sheet sensor first detects the sheet and then forwards by a further predetermined distance and if the sheet sensor initially detects a sheet then the sheet is fed backward until the sheet sensor first detects no sheet and is then fed forwards by the predetermined distance.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
93 words
The printer according to claim 1, wherein: the printer further comprises a sheet supplier for holding a plurality of separate sheets, and, in response to an external sheet-demanding command, supplying one of the sheets to a printing section of the printer; and wherein in response to the initial sheet-setting command where the sheet sensor detects no sheet the initial sheet-setting controller sends the sheet-demanding command to the sheet supplier and then causes the sheet feeding means to feed the sheet forward by the predetermined distance after the sheet sensor first detects the sheet.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
82 words
The printer according to claim 2, wherein: the sheet supplier includes a second sheet sensor at a sheet exit of the sheet supplier; and wherein when both the first sensor and the second sensor detect the sheet the initial sheet-setting controller causes the sheet feeding means, in response to the initial sheet-setting command, to feed the sheet first forward until the second sheet sensor detects no sheet, then backward until the first sensor detects no sheet, and finally forward the predetermined distance.
Claim 5
Independent Claim
71 words
A method of setting a sheet at a predetermined printing position in a printer when the sheet is already loaded in the printer, the method comprising the steps of: feeding the sheet backward until the leading edge of the sheet reaches a second predetermined position preceding a printing head of the printer; and then feeding the sheet forward a predetermined distance, whereby the sheet is set at a predetermined printing position.
Claim 6
Independent Claim
71 words
A method of setting a sheet at a predetermined printing position in a printer when the sheet is already loaded in the printer, the method comprising the steps of: feeding the sheet backward until the leading edge of the sheet reaches a second predetermined position preceding a printing head of the printer; and then feeding the sheet forward a predetermined distance, whereby the sheet is set at a predetermined printing position.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
22 words
Word processing apparatus including a printer according to claim 1, 2 or 3 or operating according to the method of claim 4.
