Abstract

Abstract A syringe for dispensing a liquid pharmaceutical composition has a first chamber (5), adjacent to nozzle (3), which contains a moisture sensitive solid drug, two movable septa (8,9) which together create a second chamber (6) and a third chamber (7) holding a liquid diluent, and a liquid by-pass passage (19) which can connect the third chamber (7) to the first chamber (5) while by-passing second chamber (6). A plunger (4) is depressed to move the septum (9) towards the nozzle (3), thereby causing liquid diluent to flow via by-pass passage (19) into the first chamber (5) to mix with the drug. The second chamber (6) contains moisture sequestering material to insulate the drug from any moisture which might leak through septum (9).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 158 words
A syringe for dispensing a liquid pharmaceutical composition, characterised in that it comprises a first chamber (5), adjacent the syringe outlet (3), for holding a first moisture sensitive component (10) of the composition, a second chamber (6), adjacent the first chamber (5), containing moisture sequestering material (17), the second chamber (6) being separated from the first chamber (5) by a first barrier member (8) movable within the syringe in response to fluid pressure, a third chamber (7), separated from the second chamber (6) by a further movable barrier member (9), for holding a second, liquid component (11) of the composition and being closed by a syringe plunger(4), and a liquid by-pass (19) for connecting the liquid component (11) in the third chamber (7) to the moisture sensitive component (10) in the first chamber (5) when the further movable barrier member (9) reaches a predetermined position in the syringe in response to a compressive force from the plunger (4).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 158 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 23 words
A syringe according to claim 1, characterised in that the first barrier member (8) comprises resilient rubber or plastics material having desiccant properties.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 38 words
A syringe according to claim 1 or 2, characterised in that the second chamber (6) contains moisture sequestering material in the form of a disc (17) of similar diameter to that of the internal wall of the syringe.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 30 words
A syringe according to any one of claims 1 to 3, characterised in that the further barrier member (9) is of greater axial length than the first barrier member (8).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 40 words
A syringe according to any one of claims 1 to 4, in which the liquid by-pass (19) comprises a tubular passage built into the wall (15) of the syringe or projecting out of and extending parallel to the wall (15).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 41 words
A syringe according to any one of claims 1 to 5, characterised in that the first barrier member (8) has a circumferential wall formed with a circumferential channel (12) connected to axially aligned grooves (16) leading to the first chamber (5).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 25 words
A syringe according to any one of claims 1 to 6, containing a moisture sensitive, pharmaceutically active solid material (10) in the first chamber (5).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 15 words
A syringe according to claim 7, characterised in that the pharmaceutically active material comprises anistreplase.
