Abstract

Abstract A device for the tensioning of a safety belt of a vehicle, for eliminating belt slack, in the event of an accident has a sensor (2, 28, 29, 30) which acts in the event of an extreme change in speed (shock load) by virtue of its inert mass, and a traction cable connected to the safety belt, cable being actuated by gas pressure released from a gas reservoir (2), gas reservoir forming part of said inertial mass.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 106 words
(1) A tensioning device comprising a fixed housing (5;41) and a tensioning member (3;49) moveably carried by the housing for connection to means (26;48) to be tensioned said tensioning member (3;49) being part of fluid pressure responsive means (3;28;42,49) and the device including speed change responsive means responsive to a predetermined rate of change of speed of the housing to apply gas under pressure from a reservoir to said pressure responsive means in a sense to move the tensioning member in a direction away from an initial position to cause tensioning movement thereof and characterised by said reservoir (2) forming part of said inertial mass (2,3.28;42,49).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 31 words
(2) A tensioning device as claimed in claim 1 characterised in that in said initial position said means (2,3,28;42,49) holds closed a valve (33,18;43,44) preventing the fluid pressure being applied thereto.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 33 words
(3) A tensioning device as claimed in claim 2 characterised in that said valve comprises an annular sealing surface (24;43) of said means sealingly engageable with an annular surface (18;44) of the housing.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
(4) A tensioning device as claimed in claim 3 characterised by said housing having a passage (27) through said valve means for recharging said reservoir with fluid pressure.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 29 words
(5) A tensioning device as claimed in claim 1, 2, 3 or 4 characterized by biassing means resiliently biassing said means 2, 3, 29, 30 towards said initial position.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 20 words
(6) A tensioning device as claimed in claim 5 characterised in that said biassing means comprises a coil spring (19;53).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 28 words
(7) A tensioning device as claimed in claim 5 characterised in that said biassing means comprises a fluid pressure responsive area (62) of said pressure responsive means (28).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 53 words
(8) A tensioning device as claimed in claim 6 characterised in that said coil spring (53) is located under compression between said pressure responsive member (42,49) and a stop (50) located in the housing, said stop being located by means which permits release of said stop by impact of the pressure responsive means.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 19 words
(9) A tensioning device as claimed in claim 5 characterised in that said biassing means comprises magnetic means 11.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 30 words
(10) A tensioning device as claimed in any claim 1 to 9 characterised in that a pawl and ratchet (4,4a;57,58) is provided operable to prevent movement in an opposite direction.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 30 words
(11) A tensioning device as claimed in any preceding claim characterised in that said reservoir includes compensation means for reducing the effects of temperature changes on the contained fluid pressure.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 15 words
(12) A tensioning device as claimed in claim 11 said compensation means comprising a bellows.
