Abstract

Abstract A portable programmable electronic computer, typically pocket sized, has very few keys to accomodate a large display screen, and thus produces alphanumeric and graphical display capabilities compatible with comprehensive alphanumeric computer operations in data processing and data communications. To achieve this the keyboard is typically as few as twelve or sixteen keys laid out with ample spacing for manual fingertip actuation without interference. Correspondingly 144 or 256 entries for alphanumeric data and computer command signals are available in a two-stroke per entry keyboard operation mode. A chart of input keystroke sequences provides on the keyboard itself the necessary dictionary of available operations without reference to outside manuals. By means of a tape recorder with computer interfacing, audio processing such as dictation and large scale digital storage of software programs, etc. is under control of the keyboard for selection of different modes of operation, including comprehensive word processing with the on-line large area multiple line alphanumeric display available.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 179 words
A programmable portable electronic computer system with an electronic disply panel, characterized by: a housing containing said computer presenting an outer surface operating panel with an alphanumeric data and computer command entry keyboard and a display medium capable of alphanumeric presentation of multiple lines of data processed by the computer, said keyboard having a plurality of manually accessible keys spaced apart for non-interfering finger tip actuation coupled for entering alphanumeric data and computer commands, a computer system in said housing operable from said keyboard to receive therefrom input data for processing and command signals for computer control purposes, said display medium comprising electronically actuated means forming a panel coupled for actuation by the computer to visually display both intermixed graphic charts with alphanumeric annotations and multiple line alphanumeric data organized by the computer for display thereon, and means providing more display area for presentation of data by decreasing the area encompassed by the keyboard area comprising a computer operating system operable from alhanumeric data processing input and computer command signals from a set of no more than sixteen keys.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 179 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 32 words
A computer system according to claim 1, characterized by a mode of keyboard and computer operation producing alphanumeric input data from fewer keys in response to more than one keystroke per entry.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 52 words
A computer system according to claim 1, characterized by a word processing mode of keyboard and computer operation for creating documents in response to manual information entered into the computer by said keys and displaying information processed by the computer in the word processing mode on the display panel in alphanumeric format.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
A computer system according to claim 1, characterized by a movable tape recording means connected for operation and interchange of data with said computer system.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 29 words
A computer system according to claim 4, characterized by audio responsive means and an audio recording mode of operation for storage of audio data with the tape recording means.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 40 words
A computer system according to claim 4, characterized by program control means for said computer responsive to stored software programs, and means storing software programs with said movable tape recording means for call up and use by the computer system.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 38 words
A computer system according to claim 2, characterized by chart means on the keyboard with indicia displaying a plurality of individual input alphanumeric data and command selections operable with a sequence of keystrokes necessary for the individual selections.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 35 words
A computer system according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that the computer system is contained in a pocket-sized housing with a single outer panel thereof sharing the display panel and the keyboard.
