Abstract

Abstract An alcoholic composition containing no more than 3% by weight of water, which is suitable for topical application to human skin comprises moisture-sensitive capsules and an alcohol chosen from C₂₋₆ alkanols and mixtures thereof the moisture sensitive capsules having an average particle size of not greater than 100µm, and comprising a non-aqueous substance encapsulated by a polymer, the capsules being: (a) resistant to extraction with alcohol such that not more than 15% by weight of the non-aqueous substance originally present in the capsules is leached from the capsules during continuous extraction of the intact capsules for a period of 30 days at 20°C with ethanol containing not more than 1% by weight of water; and (b) sensitive to moisture such that on contact with water at the skin surface, the capsules release the encapsulated non-aqueous substance.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 153 words
An alcoholic composition suitable for topical application to human skin, which comprises: (i) from 0.1 to 20% by weight of moisture-sensitive casules; and (ii) from 10 to 99.9% by weight of an alcohol chosen from C₂₋₆ alkanols and mixtures thereof; the composition comprising no more than 3% by weight of water; the moisture sensitive capsules having an average particle size of not greater than 100µm, and comprising a non-aqueous substance encapsulated by a polymer, the capsules being: (a) resistant to extraction with alcohol such that not more than 15% by weight of the non-aqueous substance originally present in the capsules is leached from the capsules during continuous extraction of the intact capsules for a period of 30 days at 20°C with ethanol containing not more than 1% by weight of water; and (b) sensitive to moisture such that on contact with water at the skin surface, the capsules release the encapsulated non-aqueous substance.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 153 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 35 words
A composition according to claim 1, in which the polymer is characterised by resistance to extraction with alcohol such that not more than 10% by weight of the non-aqueous substance is leached from the capsules.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
A composition according to claim 1 or 2, in which the polymer is a polysaccharide.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
A composition according to claim 1, 2 or 3, in which the polymer is a dextrin.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 46 words
A composition according to claim 4, in which the dextrin is one which, as a 50% dispersion in water has a viscosity at 25°C, using a Brookfield Viscometer fitted with an "A" type T-bar rotating at 20 rpm in helical mode, of 330 ± 20 mPas.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 16 words
A composition according to claim 1, 2 or 3, in which the polymer is gum acacia.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 16 words
A composition according to any preceding claim, in which the encapsulated non-aqueous substance is a perfume.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 14 words
A composition according to claim 7, in which the perfume is a deodorant perfume.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 19 words
A composition according to any of claims 1 to 6, in which the encapsulated non-aqueous substance is a coolant.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 16 words
A composition according to claim 9, in which the coolant is menthol or a derivative thereof.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 27 words
A composition according to any preceding claim, in which the non-aqueous substance is chosen from emollients, deodorants other than perfume, antiperspirant actives, anticholinergic actives and mixtures thereof.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 22 words
A composition according to any preceding claim, in which the moisture-sensitive capsules form from 0.2 to 15% by weight of the composition.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 19 words
