Abstract

Abstract This improved toner for developing electrostatically charged images is composed of associated secondary particles contg. prim. particles of an acidic or basic polar gp.-contg. polymer, colourant particles, and an optional charge controlling agent. The secondary particles form a membrane and their points of contact are pref. partially fused. The toner is produced in the following process, (1) the colourant and charge controlling agent are added to the polymer emulsion. (2) the emulsion is then heated with stirring at 20-45 deg.C for 1-3 hrs. (3) the temp. is then raised for 1-3 hrs. to a point higher than the glass transition point, but less than 65 deg.C higher (4) the produced associated particles are then filtered in stages, (5) the particles are then dried. The toner can also contain a carrier such as iron pieces, glass pieces, etc. Typically, the glass transition point of the basic polymer used for producing the toner is 90-100 deg.C (pref. 30-100 deg.C best 10-60 deg.C).
