Abstract
Abstract There is provided a numerical expression recognizing apparatus for recognizing a handwritten numerical expression and outputting as a code train. This apparatus comprises: a coordinates input apparatus (11, 12) for inputting a numerical expression consisting of characters including numerals and signs by coordinates; a recognition circuit (21, 22) for recognizing the characters including the numerals and signs and constructing the numerical expression on the basis of a set of the coordinates which were input by the coordinates input apparatus; and an output control circuit (24) for outputting the pattern of the numerical expression constructed by the characters on the basis of the coordinates which were input by the coordinates input apparatus and the characters recognized by the recognition circuit. The pattern of the numerical expression is displayed by a liquid crystal display (13). The recognition circuit (22) has a converter to convert the characters constructing the numerical expression which were input by the coordinates input apparatus into the code information. With this apparatus, a numerical expression including fraction, power, square root, or the like can be directly easily input in accordance with the expressing method which is ordinarily used in the mathematics in a manner similar to the handwriting.

An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said output control means comprises: first storage means for storing a character pattern of a predetermined size; second storage means in which vector information is stored; discriminating means for discriminating whether the character recognized by said recognizing means is a size-determined character whose size has previously been determined or a size-undetermined character whose size is not determined yet; and means for reading out the character pattern from said first storage means when the recognized character was determined to be the size-determined character by said discriminating means, for making the character pattern by the vector information stored in said second storage means when the recognized character was determined to be the size-undetermined character by the discriminating means, and for outputting the resultant character pattern to said output control means.
