Process for the preparation of pyrrolo [3,4-c] pyrroles
Abstract
Process for the preparation of 1,4-diketopyrrolo [3,4-c] pyrroles of the formula I. wherein R₁ and R₂ independently of one another are phenyl, diphenyl or naphthyl radicals or aromatic O-, S- or N-heterocyclic radicals, by reacting 1 mol of a dicyclohexyl succinate, dialkyl ester, monoalkyl monophenyl ester or diphenyl ester, alkyl in the succinate ester radical C₁-C₁₈-alkyl and phenyl unsubstituted or phenyl substituted by one or two halogen atoms, one or two C₁-C₆-alkyl or C₁-C₆-alkoxy groups, with 2 mol of a nitrile of the formula II or III or with 1 mol of a nitrile of formula II and 1 mole of a nitrile of formula III R₁-CN (II), R₂-CN (III), wherein R₁ and R₂ have the meaning given above, in an inert organic solvent in the presence of an alkali metal or an alkali alcoholate as a strong base at elevated temperature to an alkali metal salt of formula IV wherein M represents an alkali metal, and subsequent release of a compound of formula I by protolysis of a compound of formula IV above, characterized in that a compound of formula IV above in at least two portions with water, with an inorganic and / or organic acid, with a Mixture of water and an organic solvent, or with a mixture of an inorganic or organic acid and water or / and at least one organic solvent, added sequentially, and after the addition of the respective portions can react at a temperature of 20 to 150 ° C.
