Abstract

Abstract Novel conformable adhesive tapes consisting essentially of: (1) a water-impermeable backing layer from about 1 to 3 mils thick; (2) a flame-retardant, evenly tearable synthetic fibre cloth or scrim; (3) a flame-retardant adhesive layer, preferably a rubber-based adhesive; and (4) a thin tie coat layer between the backing and the scrim which, when applied as a molten mass, at least partially fills the interstices between the fibres of the scrim so as to provide surface contact with the underlying adhesive layer, the tie coat providing a strong bond at both the tie coat/backing interface and the tie coat/scrim and adhesive interfaces, thereby providing a laminar product possessing the desired anchorage and structural stability and integrity. The tape is particularly useful in wrapping irregular surfaces, e.g. as a wire harness wrap, where conformability is essential to good adhesive contact.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 95 words
An adhesive tape comprising a water-impermeable backing layer carrying, on one side thereof, a flame retardant fibre cloth tearable in the cross direction optionally containing up to 50% cotton in the yarn of the warp of the cloth; an outer adhesive layer; and a tie coat layer positioned between the said backing layer and the said cloth, the said tie coat at least partially filling interstices between the fibres of the said cloth, the said tie coat providing a bond at the tie coat/backing layer interface, the tie coat/cloth interface and the tie coat/adhesive interface.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 95 words
An adhesive tape comprising a water-impermeable backing layer carrying, on one side thereof, a flame retardant fibre cloth tearable in the cross direction optionally containing up to 50% cotton in the yarn of the warp of the cloth; an outer adhesive layer; and a tie coat layer positioned between the said backing layer and the said cloth, the said tie coat at least partially filling interstices between the fibres of the said cloth, the said tie coat providing a bond at the tie coat/backing layer interface, the tie coat/cloth interface and the tie coat/adhesive interface.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 119 words
An adhesive tape comprising a water-impermeable polyolefin backing layer including a flame retardant, the said backing layer being from 1 to 3 mils (0.025 to 0.076 mms) thick and carrying on one side thereof a woven cloth, optionally containing up to 50% cotton in the yarn of the warp of the cloth, the cloth being substantially evenly tearable in the cross direction; an outer pressure sensitive adhesive layer; and a thin tie coat layer positioned between the said backing layer and the said cloth, the said tie coat at least partially filling interstices between fibres of the said cloth whereby to physically contact adhesive in the said adhesive layer interface, the tie coat/cloth interface and the tie coat/adhesive interface.
Claim 4
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 24 words
An adhesive tape as claimed in Claim 1 in which the said backing layer is 1 to 3 mils (0.025 to 0.076 mms) thick.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 32 words
An adhesive tape as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the said tie coat layer is from about 0.025 to about 1.0 mil (0.0006 to 0.025 mms) thick.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 22 words
An adhesive tape as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the said tie coat comprises ethylene methyl acrylate.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 48 words
An adhesive tape as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the said woven cloth is characterized by having up to 20 false twist yarns per inch (8 per cm) in the filling direction and up to 35 yarns per inch (14 per cm) warp.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 21 words
An adhesive tape as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the outer adhesive layer is flame retardant.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 22 words
An adhesive tape as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the outer adhesive layer is a rubber-based adhesive.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 23 words
An adhesive tape as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the said backing layer is of low density polyethylene.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 35 words
An adhesive tape as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which woven cloth is woven polyester cloth, optionally containing up to 50% cotton in the yarn of the warp of the cloth.
