Abstract

Abstract A covering such as a glove, condom or sheath for inhibiting the spread of contagious diseases such as AIDS and Hepatitis to a person contacting the body fluid of a person infected with the disease. The covering is flexible, stretchable, and relatively thin, and includes at least one relatively thin layer of material containing a sterilizing fluid capable of sterilizing the microbes that produce the disease. If an object cuts through the covering and into a person's skin, the sterilizing fluid will be released to help sterilize the infectious microbes in the region around the cut so that the microbes are rendered ineffective either before reaching the person's skin, after reaching the person's skin, or both. Various methods of making and using the covering are also disclosed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 18
Claim 1
Independent Claim 57 words
A covering for inhibiting the spread of a contagious disease to a person contacting the body fluid of a person infected with the disease, comprising fluid-impermeable inner and outer surface layers and an intermediate layer comprising a plurality of discrete or interconnected chambers encapsulating a sterilising fluid capable of sterilising microbes causing the disease substantially upon contact.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 57 words
A covering for inhibiting the spread of a contagious disease to a person contacting the body fluid of a person infected with the disease, comprising fluid-impermeable inner and outer surface layers and an intermediate layer comprising a plurality of discrete or interconnected chambers encapsulating a sterilising fluid capable of sterilising microbes causing the disease substantially upon contact.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 41 words
A covering according to claim 1, wherein the intermediate layer includes a plurality of strata each comprising a regular array of chambers containing the sterilising fluid, the chambers in each stratum being staggered relative to the chambers in an adjacent stratum.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
A covering according to claim 2, wherein the intermediate layer comprises two strata of chambers.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 19 words
A covering according to claim 2 or claim 3 wherein the intermediate layer comprises from 50 to 500 chambers.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 23 words
A covering according to any one of claims 2 to 4, wherein each chamber has a volume of less than two cubic mm.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 32 words
A covering according to claim 1, wherein the intermediate layer is an open cell foamed plastics material having at least 200 chambers each having a volume of less than 2 cubic mm.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 16 words
A covering according to claim 1, wherein the intermediate layer is an absorbent flexible woven material.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 19 words
A covering according to any one of claims 1 to 7 having a thickness from 1 to 5 mm.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 29 words
A covering according to any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the thickness of the inner surface layer is greater than the thickness of the outer surface layer.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 17 words
A covering according to any one of claims 1 to 9, in the form of a glove.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 17 words
A covering according to any one of claims 1 to 9, in the form of a condom.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 25 words
A covering according to claim 11, wherein the chambers encapsulating the sterilising fluid are contained only in the head or tip region of the condom.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 22 words
A covering according to any one of claims 1 to 12, wherein the sterilising fluid is capable of neutralising the AIDS virus.
Claim 15
Independent Claim 62 words
A method of making a covering according to any one of claims 1 to 13, comprising the steps of applying the sterilising fluid to the intermediate layer comprising the plurality of discreet or interconnected chambers so that the sterilising fluid is encapsulated within those chambers, and providing surface layers on the intermediate layer to retain the sterilising fluid within the intermediate layer.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 20 words
A method according to claim 14, wherein the surface layers are formed by fusing the surfaces of the intermediate layer.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 20 words
A method according to claim 14, wherein the surface layers are applied in the form of a hardenable liquid compositions.
Claim 18
Independent Claim 45 words
A method of inhibiting the spread of AIDS to a person having sexual intercourse with a person infected with the AIDS virus, which comprises the male participant wearing a condom according to any one of claims 11 to 13 for the duration of sexual intercourse.
