Abstract
Abstract Addition of linear polyethylene compounds to an asphalt having a specified minimum weight ratio of asphaltenes to saturates results in a composition which has enhanced storage stability and creep resistance relative to the unmodified asphalt. The composition is useful as a binder in paving materials and as a coating or saturant for roofing products.

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim
36 words
An asphalt composition having improved storage stability and creep resistance, which composition comprises: (a) asphalt in which the weight ratio of saturates to asphaltenes is above about 5.5, and (b) at least one linear polyethylene compound.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
36 words
An asphalt composition having improved storage stability and creep resistance, which composition comprises: (a) asphalt in which the weight ratio of saturates to asphaltenes is above about 5.5, and (b) at least one linear polyethylene compound.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
24 words
The asphalt composition of claim 1, wherein the weight ratio of saturates to asphaltenes in said asphalt ranges from about 5.5 to about 9.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
24 words
The composition of claim 1 or claim 2, wherein at least about 4 wt.% of said linear polyethylene compound is present in said asphalt.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
16 words
The composition of claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said composition is an asphalt paving binder.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
19 words
The composition of claim 4, which contains from about 4 to about 8 wt.% of said linear polyethylene compound.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
16 words
The composition of claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said composition is an asphalt roofing product.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
19 words
The composition of claim 6, which contains from about 5 to about 15 wt.% of said linear polyethylene compound.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
33 words
The composition of any preceding claim, wherein said linear polyethylene compound is selected from linear very low density polyethylene compounds, linear low density polyethylene compounds, linear high density polyethylene compounds, and mixtures thereof.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
57 words
The composition of claim 8, wherein said linear very low density polyethylene compounds have a melt index of at least about 3 g/10 mins., said linear low density polyethylene compounds having a melt index at least about 8 g/10 mins., said linear high density polyethylene compounds have a melt index of at least about 6.7 g/10 mins.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
72 words
A process for improving the creep resistance and storage stability of an asphalt, which process comprises mixing at least one linear polyethylene compound with an asphalt in which the weight ratio of saturates to asphaltenes is at least about 5.5, and preferably about 5.5 to about 9.0; thereby forming a polyethylene modified asphalt which has enhanced creep resistance and storage stability relative to that in the absence of the linear polyethylene compound.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
72 words
A process for improving the creep resistance and storage stability of an asphalt, which process comprises mixing at least one linear polyethylene compound with an asphalt in which the weight ratio of saturates to asphaltenes is at least about 5.5, and preferably about 5.5 to about 9.0; thereby forming a polyethylene modified asphalt which has enhanced creep resistance and storage stability relative to that in the absence of the linear polyethylene compound.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
21 words
The process of claim 10, wherein at least about 4 wt.% of said linear polyethylene compound is added to said asphalt.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
22 words
The process of claim 10 or claim 11, wherein said linear polyethylene compound is as defined in claim 8 or claim 9.
