Abstract

Abstract An optical communication system is disclosed in which a group, or comb, of intelligence-bearing optical signals are frequency-division-multiplexed and stabilized using a corresponding comb of resonances associated with a Fabry-Perot cavity (101). In one type of application, suitable for a system in which the optical-signals originate at difference locations, there is a separate Fabry-Perot cavity at each location and one resonance of each cavity is aligned with a common reference signal (102). The frequencies of the other optical signals (103) are adjusted into alignment with other resonances of the Fabry-Perot cavity at the respective location. In an application in which the optical signals originate at only one location, they are all aligned with separate resonances of a single Fabry-Perot cavity, which does not need to be adjustable.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 48 words
An optical communications system for processing frequency-multiplexed, modulated optical signals CHARACTERISED BY a Fabry-Perot cavity (101,208) having a plurality of resonances and means (107,108; 203,204) for maintaining relative alignment between the frequencies of a plurality of the said optical signals and respective separate resonances of the Fabry-Perot cavity.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 48 words
An optical communications system for processing frequency-multiplexed, modulated optical signals CHARACTERISED BY a Fabry-Perot cavity (101,208) having a plurality of resonances and means (107,108; 203,204) for maintaining relative alignment between the frequencies of a plurality of the said optical signals and respective separate resonances of the Fabry-Perot cavity.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 110 words
A system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the Fabry-Perot cavity is arranged to receive the said frequency-multiplexed, modulated optical signals and the alignment-maintaining means includes a separate feedback loop (107,108,203,204) associated with each of the said plurality of optical signals, each said feedback loop including a mixer (109,114), one input (112,113) of which is connected to receive modulated components of the frequency-multiplexed optical signals which are output from the Fabry-Perot cavity and the other input (115) of which is connected to receive the modulating signal carried by the respective optical signal, thereby to produce an error signal associated with the respective one of the said plurality of optical signals.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 64 words
A system as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein one of the optical signals (102) is a reference signal and the alignment-maintaining means is arranged to adjust the Fabry-Perot cavity to align the frequency of one resonance thereof with that of the reference signal and to adjust the frequency of the or each other one of the said plurality of optical signals.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 27 words
A system as claimed in claim 3 wherein there is a plurality of Fabry-Perot cavities, each with a respective alignment-maintaining means and having a common reference signal.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 29 words
A system as claimed in claim 3 or claim 4 wherein the or each Fabry-Perot cavity includes a piezo-electric element for the said adjustment of the respective Fabry-Perot cavity.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 29 words
A system as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the alignment-maintaining means (203, 204) is arranged to adjust the frequencies of the said plurality of optical signals.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 23 words
A system as claimed in claim 6 wherein the said plurality of optical signals comprises more than two optical signals (1301, 1302, 1303).
