Abstract

Abstract A dual cure (radiation-curable and ambient moisture cure) liquid coating composition yielding solid hydrophilic material comprising at least: (A) an acrylate capped polyurethane oligomer of: (1) a polyoxyethylene glycol of molecular weight between 1000 and 2500, (2) a diisocyanate at a ratio of approximately twice the equivalent weight of the polyoxyethylene glycol, and (3) a hydroxyalkyl acrylate sufficient to afford a final radiation curable oligomer terminated in both acrylate and isocyanate functionalities wherein the isocyanate functionality has a percent NCO less than or equal to 1.5%, and (B) a reactive diluent. The cured hydrophilic material is both water absorbing and water transmitting and is found to have useful physical properties.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 128 words
A process for making a coating of a composition comprising (A) an acrylate capped urethane oligomer of (1) a polyoxyethylene glycol of molecular weight between 1000 and 2500, (2) diisocyanate at a ratio of approximately twice the equivalent weight of the polyoxyethylene glycol, and (3) a hydroxyalkyl acrylate, and (B) a reactive diluent, and curing the composition by exposure to radiation, characterized in that the hydroxy alkyl acrylate does not fully cap all isocyanate groups of the polyurethane oligomer to afford a final radiation curable oligomer terminated in both acrylate and isocyanate functionalities wherein the isocyanate functionality has a percent NCO less than or equal to 1,5% and that subsequent to curing the composition by exposure to radiation the uncapped isocyanate groups are cured via a water reaction.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 16 words
The process according to claim 1, wherein the reactive diluent is less than 20% N-vinyl pyrrolidone.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 19 words
The process according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the reactive diluent is less than 15% N-vinyl pyrrolidone.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 16 words
The process according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the composition comprises a UV photoinitiator.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 15 words
The process according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the composition comprises a stabiliser.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 15 words
The process according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the composition comprises a thermal stabilizer.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 15 words
The process according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the diisocyanate is 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 15 words
The process according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the diisocyanate is 4,4'-methylenebiscyclohexyl diisocyanate.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 20 words
The process according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the ratio of diisocyanate to polyoxyethylene glycol is about 2:1.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 16 words
The process according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the hydroxyalkyl acrylate is 1,4-butanediol monoacrylate.
