Abstract

Abstract In the practice of the present invention, new and improved MWD apparatus is cooperatively arranged to be coupled to a MWD tool arranged to be suspended in a borehole from a drill string and adapted for measuring at least one downhole condition not requiring irradiation by a radioactive source and at least one downhole condition requiring irradiation by a radioactive source. The apparatus includes a retrievable carrier for safely transporting a chemical radioactive source through the drill string between the apparatus of the invention and the earth's surface so that the carrier can be selectively returned to the surface whenever it is desired to remove the source from the borehole without affecting the subsequent operation of the MWD tool in measuring at least one downhole condition that does not require irradiation

Claim 1
Independent Claim 120 words
A logging apparatus (10) having a tubular body (14) for movement through a borehole (17) while making investigations of the properties of earth formations (18) surrounding the borehole, characterized by including: a. an upwardly opening passage (27) in an upper portion of said tubular body for accomodating the lengthwise insertion and removal of an energy radiating source (58,55); b. a chamber (47) in the interior of said tubular body and communicating with said passage for receiving an energy radiating source therein; c. an energy radiating source (58,55) removeably positioned in said chamber, said source including an uppermost portion (54) engagable by a source removing device; and d. a radiation detector (59,60)/(30,31) disposed at a location spaced lengthwise from said chamber.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 120 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 49 words
The logging apparatus as recited in claim 1 in which said source includes a gamma ray source (55) and being further characterized by including means (21) arranged on the exterior of said tubular body for substantially reducing radiation streaming through the borehole annulus from said source to said detector.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 35 words
The logging apparatus as recited in claim 2 further characterized by including passages (37,41), (38,42), (49,51) adjacent both said chamber and said detector for directing gamma radiation through said tubular body and said exterior means.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 31 words
The logging apparatus as recited in claim 3 further characterized by including radiation transparent material (39,43), (40,44), (50,52) in said passages for excluding fluids in the borehole annulus from said passages.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 28 words
The logging apparatus as recited in claim 2 further characterized in that said gamma ray source is disposed eccentered from the longitudinal central axis of said tubular body.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 39 words
The logging apparatus as recited in claim 1 in which said source includes a neutron source (58) and being further characterized by including means (64) for positioning said neutron source on the longitudinal central axis of said tubular body.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 28 words
The logging apparatus as recited in claim 1 further characterized by said energy radiating source including a neutron source and a gamma ray source coupled to one another.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 52 words
The logging apparatus as recited in claim 7 further characterized by including means (64,47) on the interior of said tubular body for positioning said neutron source on the longitudinal central axis of said tubular body and for positioning said gamma ray source eccentered from the longitudinal central axis of said tubular body.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 32 words
The logging apparatus as recited in claim 1 further characterized by said tubular body comprising a drill collar (14) coupled in a drill string (11) during the process of drilling the borehole.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 28 words
The logging apparatus as recited in claim 7 further characterized in that the means (53) by which said neutron and gamma ray sources are coupled is laterally flexible.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 30 words
The logging apparatus as recited in claim 1 further characterized in that said chamber is an upwardly opening chamber at least partially located in the wall of said tubular body.
