Abstract

Abstract A radio controlled toy incorporates a module (2) containing a compact television camera, radio frequency transmitter and radio control receiver mounted in a toy body (4). The camera incoporates a lens system desinged to record point of view impressions from the toy and a microphone to provide impressions of the audio environment for transmission by the radio frequency transmitter to a remote television module. A television module (10) incorporates means to receive the video and audio transmissions from the camera and reproduce them via a television system and audio speaker associated with the television module. A control module (16) alows an operator (14) viewing the television module and hearing the audio sounds reproduced, to operate a set of controls to send control signals derived from the position of the controls by a radio control transmitter in the television module to the radio control receiver in the camera module. The camera module (2) may be used in a variety of mobile toys (4) thus providing the operator (14) with a pleasurable simulation of the point of view associated with much larger environments or full scale vehicles.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 16
Claim 1
Independent Claim 140 words
A radio controlled toy characterised by a first module comprising a television camera, means to receive radio control signals from a remote location, and means to transmit a video signal generated by said television camera to a remote location; a second module comprising controls that may be operated by a human operator to procuce encoded electrical signals for transmission; a third module comprising means to transmit a radio control signal containing said encoded electrical signals, and means to receive said video signal transmitted from said first module; means for displaying the signal received by said receiver in said third module; and a toy comprising means to mount said first module thereon, energy means to energize said first module, and servo-mechanisms operable by said means to receive radio control signals in said first module to provide for motion of said toy.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 140 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 20 words
A toy as claimed in Claim 1, characterised in that said television camera incorporates a charge coupled device focal plane.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 40 words
A toy as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, characterised in that said means to transmit said video signal comprises an infrared emitter and transmitter, and said means to receive said video signal comprises an infrared detector and receiver.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 70 words
A system as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 3, characterised in that said first module includes means to detect sound and convert said sound to an electrical signal; said means to transmit said video signal includes means to simultaneously tramsit said electrical signal corresponding to said sound; and said third module includes means to reproduce said sound corresponding to said electrical signals transmitted from said first module.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 48 words
A toy as claimed in any preceding claim, characterised in that said means to transmit said video signal comprises a radio frequency modulation system in which discrete carrier frequencies are modulated by a predetermined code sequence for the purpose of spreading the transmission energy over a broad bandwidth.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 26 words
A toy as claimed in Claim 5, characterised in that said modulation is by means of a biphase modulation (BPSK) code sequence of predetermined data rate.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 22 words
A toy as claimed in Claim 6, characterised in that said predetermined data rate for said biphase modulation scheme is 18 Mbps.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 20 words
A toy as claimed in any preceding claim, characterised in that said controls comprise hand controllers operating variable resistance circuits.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 48 words
A toy as claimed in Claim 3, on any one of Claims 4 to 8 as dependent upon Claim 3, characterised in that said infrared transmitter includes means to modulate an infrared source and means to direct radiation from said source in an essentially horizontal, 360 degree pattern.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 27 words
A toy as claimed in Claim 9, characteised in that said means to direct comprises an inverted, essentially cone-shaped reflector with the apex aimed at said source.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 29 words
A toy as claimed in Claim 9 or Claim 10, characterised by means to prevent the impingement of radiation from an overhead source upon said infrared detector and receiver.
