Abstract

Abstract Apparatus for applying force to the skin such as to for use in stretching the skin by load cycling, or for use as a surgical retractor, comprises two pins (1 and 2) or hooks (60) that are joined together by a flexible nylon strap (10). The strap (10) has rectangular apertures (11) separated by lateral bars (12). One end of the strap (10) is rivet ed to one pin (1) whilst the other end of the strap passed through a ratchet locking device (40) mounted on the other pin (2). In use, one pin (1) is fastened to a loose flap of skin (3) and the other pin is fastened to another site on the skin surface. The free end of the strap (10) is then pulled through the locking device (40), which holds it against movement in the opposite direction, until the desired tension is applied.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 80 words
Surgical apparatus for applying force to the skin, characterised in that the apparatus comprises first and second retaining devices (1 and 2, 60) that retain different respective regions of the skin, a flexible strap (10) secured between the first and second retaining devices, and a locking device (40) that retains the strap (10) against forces tending to separate the two retaining devices (1 and 2) but allows the length of the strap between the two retaining devices to be shortened.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 80 words
Surgical apparatus for applying force to the skin, characterised in that the apparatus comprises first and second retaining devices (1 and 2, 60) that retain different respective regions of the skin, a flexible strap (10) secured between the first and second retaining devices, and a locking device (40) that retains the strap (10) against forces tending to separate the two retaining devices (1 and 2) but allows the length of the strap between the two retaining devices to be shortened.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 39 words
Surgical apparatus according to Claim 1, characterised in that the locking device (40) includes a tongue (42) that bears resiliently on the strap (10) to allow displacement of the strap in one direction and not in the opposite direction.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 27 words
Surgical apparatus according to Claim 2, characterised in that the strap (10) has lateral bars (12) and that the tongue (42) bears resiliently on the bars (12).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 47 words
Surgical apparatus according to Claim 3, characterised in that the tongue (42) is located in a passage (41) through the locking device (40) and that the tongue (42) has an inclined surface (43) over which the bars (12) of the strap (10) can slide in one direction.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 27 words
Surgical apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the locking device (40) is mounted on one of the retaining devices (2, 60).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 30 words
Surgical apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the retaining device (1, 2) includes a pin that is pushed through and under the skin surface.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 62 words
Surgical apparatus according to Claim 6, characterised in that the pin is of generally U-shape with two parallel limbs (22 and 23), that one limb (23) has a clip (21) mounted at one end, and that the other limb (22) has a sharpened point (27) that is pushed through the skin surface, the sharpened point (27) being engageable with the clip (21).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 46 words
Surgical apparatus according to Claim 7, characterised in that one of the limbs (23) is formed in a loop (24) at a point along its length, and that the strap is secured at one end to a loop (24) in one of the retaining devices (1).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 27 words
Surgical apparatus according to Claim 8, characterised in that the locking device (40) is secured to a loop (24) in the other of the retaining devices (2).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 47 words
Surgical apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 5, characterised in that the retaining devices are hooks (60) that include at least one prong (61) that curves downwardly into the skin, the or each prong (61) on the two hooks (60) pointing towards one another.
